When you let your young children (2 & 5) paint with watercolors, do you let them use the tray of dry paints and add water or do you have them use liquid watercolors (different container and brush for each color)?
I would like to use real watercolor paper with the 5 year old. Where do you get cheap watercolor paper?
We use both but prefer the liquid watercolors the best. I give each child a paper/foam plate with a small amount of each color for their palette, a brush and a cup of water. For paper – I keep white cardstock for them to paint on. You can buy it in a pack of 150 sheets for around $6.00 so it’s budget friendly. Manilla paper or the more expensive, thicker printer paper works well too in a pinch.
My youngest just turned 3 last week but she has been painting for over a year now and does just fine with her palette, washing her brush out, etc.
What liquid watercolor can you put on a paper plate and it not run? I had seen that someone had some made up in a mason jar. I was thinking about those kid water/paint jars from the craft store. I would be interested to try it as I am tired of cleaning out the “brown” paints. The 5 year old is doing well keeping her new watercolor set clean, but the two year old obiously is not.
I buy the Crayola brand watercolor set in a box at walmart for around $4.00. I think you get 10 colors. You can buy these in larger bottles at the craft stores too. It is not runny so it stays put on the plate without running into the other colors, it’s a good consistency. I love this paint – the colors are very vibrant.
Clean up is a breeze – throw away the plate palette, rinse out the brushes and wipe off the table. This paint comes out of carpet, clothes and hair with warm water very easily.
My youngest learned not to mix the colors or else she would end up with brown or black and she loves the colors so this is not an issue anymore. She learned this after only a couple of times of having to paint with an icky brownish color. lol She was barely 2 at the time.
So is the paint you put on the paper just regular paint, similar to acyrilic paint only washable from Crayola? I hadn’t thought of doing that, but it sounds like it would be great.
I’ve ordered our watercolor paper from Miller Pad and Paper in Wisconsin. It has been very reasonable and they do have a website but I often call them directly to find out if I can get what I am looking for. Their website and info is at: http://www.millerpadsandpaper.com/contact_us.aspx
We’ve been very pleased with the items we’ve received from them.
