Was all set for using the module 5 guides (epistles and early American History), but I am wondering if I should start at the beginning instead after reading an article (first mistake lol!) about the benefits of doing history chronologically. My kids are 3, 5, and 7. They are very familiar with most all of the Old Testament history and my husband thinks they would relate to this best. But we also are living in South Carolina for just a couple more years, so I am wondering if I should take advantage of where we are at geographically and do some American History while here. Any thoughts? At some point obviously, the three year old will not be starting chronologically so someone will have to be “mixed up” along the way…again, love the help here, and thank you ahead of time!!
It won’t matter where you start, especially if your child is making the rounds of the history cycles twice. Keeping a Book of Centuries or a wall timeline so there is a visual reminder of how everything fits together can make all the difference. It allows the child to make their own connections to the various historical periods.
Go for the American. It really doesn’t matter where in the cycle you start. If American history is what interests your family, then go for it. I’m sure you have lots of ideas for mod 5 that have been buzzing around inside your head for weeks. Don’t let an artcle through you off course. All the second guessing really robs the joy of the experience.
I would do American and local historic sites. I did module 5 last year with ages 6 and 8 and the world history was hit or miss. We focused more time on America and will study more world history next time. They enjoyed it more than ancient history and we love the d’Aulaire books. Enjoy!
Agree, does not matter. We started with Mod 5 last year and it was great. For different reasons we went back to Mod 1 this year. I am not concerned. There is no way to have every child start with #1, and it will all work out in the end
More agreeeing here. We started off in Module 1, with some extra reading from a book of stories from American History a couple days a week a few years ago, and I realized that ds was much more interested in the American history and often begged me to keep reading. So the next year, I switched to American history. We’ll be finishing up with the modern era this year, and will jump back to ancient history next year. Eventually we will come back around to American history again. Its all good! 🙂
Just adding my 2 cents…. We are doing it chrono, but if in your position, I’d say go with American and for these reasons.
1. You are prepared for it already
2. You are in an area with great American history potential for field trips etc.
3. Going chrono does have the sticky situation of learning false gods etc. like Greek mythology and with littles, some say there could be confusion etc.
4. You can go from your town, to your state to the US pretty quickly taking kids from local to world wide easy enough and for little it is more concrete than abstract
