A huge help to these communities where the parents don’t have a choice would be vouchers. The NEA is adamantly against them as it promotes competition, breaking the monopoly; and the gov’t. can’t have that.
So in addition to the idea of helping when we are finished with ours, something that can be done now is to push your Representatives to support vouchers. There are many examples of the success of students going to another private or gov’t. school system, when the parents (those that care) have a choice. There also needs to be a state-by-state movement to break some of the power behind the strongest union in the Country-The National Education Association. Diminish their power, return schools back to the local and state levels; among other things.
