Just watched this last night, it was very informative on the current issues of today’s schools and teachers.Whoa!
So….. I just want to say “HATS OFF TO HOMESCHOOL MOMS!!”. We are so blessed to be able to teach our children, and they are so blessed to have us too. Praise God! 🙂

We watched this last week, and my heart was broken for all those children trapped in bad schools with no way out. Beware–this is a serious tear-jerker.
I’ve been wondering ever since I’ve seen it—churches in these inner city areas, especially, need to establish homeschool support ministries. Many of the families profiled in the documentary would probably have been unable to homeschool even if they wanted to, without significant financial and educational support. Something for those of us who survive homeschooling to consider when we “graduate” IMO.

You are right Michelle, maybe we should be considering that when we finish with our own…I too would like to see more assistance offered to those who would love to homeschool but who cannot – the churches could do a lot more, but sadly some churches have dumbed down as well – it is not an easy problem. A huge help to these communities where the parents don’t have a choice would be vouchers. The NEA is adamantly against them as it promotes competition, breaking the monopoly; and the gov’t. can’t have that.
So in addition to the idea of helping when we are finished with ours, something that can be done now is to push your Representatives to support vouchers. There are many examples of the success of students going to another private or gov’t. school system, when the parents (those that care) have a choice. There also needs to be a state-by-state movement to break some of the power behind the strongest union in the Country-The National Education Association. Diminish their power, return schools back to the local and state levels; among other things.

Yes, vouchers would help, but I don’t know if we’ll ever see it happen. The documentary really highlights just how strong a stranglehold the NEA has on things. I know they just killed yet another good bill in MY state. Sigh. I’m really not sure it’s even possible, with the money the teachers’ unions are willing to spend, to ever get past it. Sigh. Look what’s happening in Wisconsin. THAT’s how the unions will react if we try to get widespread vouchers. Some of them would rather turn violent than give in.

It is scary to see the stranglehold the unions have over things – Wisconsin is a great example of that – in the end it is the kids that suffer and that is so sad. I remember when Margaret Thatcher broke the backs of the unions in England, it took some doing, but they did not call her the iron lady for nothing – once that happened things changed for the better – now sadly the unions are rearing their ugly heads again in the UK – what started out as a good organization has deteriorated into something quite different – all very disturbing, so I think that though vouchers are a start it will never be allowed to happen like Michelle said.

When I moved from the UK I was amazed at how powerful the union movement is here, compared to what I knew in the UK. Most of our Govt. Ministers are former union reperesentatives and in fact the Prime Minister used to be a lawyer for the unions. They only represent about 15% of the populatin , but have great influence within our current Govt.

It is a problem it seems worldwide…Kcoard, do you live in Australia, I have a friend who I spent a year with in Perth, WA and who now lives in Darwin – she has told me similar things to what you are saying – it is a worry. Linda

Kathy, I think you live in a very beautiful place – I was always sad I never made it to Sydney and that side of Australia. I love it that there are lots of Nations represented on this forum. I found my time in Australia all those years ago just wonderful – the nature and sights were out of this world – I just loved it, when my year was up I was very sad to leave and I have never been able to afford to go back, but maybe one day.
