There have been so many great ones that it makes it hard to choose. I will say, however, that many of our favorite family read-alouds were suggestions from Sonlight. A few of ours that come to mind:
Little Britches
Cheaper by the Dozen (agreeing with Tristan on the editing on the fly)
The Great Turkey Walk — we re-read this as a family read-aloud when our boys were teens and they were literally rolling on the floor laughing
Carry on, Mr. Bowditch
The Red Keep
There is a Dutch author whose books we love, but I never see them recommended in homeschooling circles — Piet Prins. We’ve read ALL of his books and love them all. He has a series about the resistance during WW II that is absolutely excellent. It is good for younger children because it doesn’t dwell on the horrific aspects of war. Even my very sensitive kids enjoyed it without being frightened.
Another WW II book we enjoy is Journey Through the Night. It is actually a four book series that is sometimes available in one book. Not readily available in the US, but so worth reading!
In May we went on a road trip and we listened to the first 3 anne’s and everyone positively loved them. They helped to make the 7000 miles wiz by. Listened to by my ds14, dd 10, ds7 and dear niece 10 along with 3 adults. Martha
So far, “The Fields of Home” by Ralph Moody is my favorite read-aloud! “Gorry sakes! Gorry sakes alive, Ralphie!!” Tons of fun to try to put a voice to the grandfather’s funny catch-phrases 🙂
