Anybody like Wordly Wise? I know it’s not CM, but I’m needing help. DS10 tends to pick up voc. pretty well just from reading (enjoys reading challenging books). DD13 is not as much a reader, and the type to just want to get through her work (but obeys and is diligent:) I don’t think her voc. level is what it should be for a 7th grader.
Last year we tried writing down words and def. together and using in sentences. I don’t think the words really stuck for long term. The goal was to try and use throughout the week in regular life, but that didn’t happen. This year I’ve been having them write words/def./a sentence for 2 words/day from their readings. I mean to go over the words w/them once a week…but haven’t. I’d really prefer them to be independent in this, hence interest in Wordly Wise. But foremost I want what’s best! I like the idea of words coming naturally from daily readings, but in reading classic books it seems like a lot of words she chooses are not every day words nowadays. Help, please!!! Blessings, Gina
I have no experience with WW for the older levels – we are in level 5. My son loves it. I know many agree that it isn’t CM, but he learns from it, loves doing it, so we keep at it. It handles differnet forms of words/word roots, word origins, synonyms, etc. It doesn’t take up much of our day, he is about 95% independent with it, and I hear him using/telling me about things he has learned from it in day to day use – so in my book it is a winner for us. If you think it may work, the books are fairly cheap, so you could try a level out and see what you think.
Yes, actually I teach English from the Roots Up to our little co-op. We’re about 1/4 of the way through it (goal is to complete all 100 roots by SAT’s:) I think it’s a great program, but it’s taking us a while to get through the roots (we only meet for classes monthly) and I have a feeling there are still gaps in words that she can’t necessarily figure out (but I could be wrong!) Thanks:) Gina
P.S. If anybody has an opinion on Voc. from the Classical Roots, I’ve heard it recommended. But thought it might be overkill since we do the above.
I know Sonlight uses Wordly Wise. I am thinking of using it after Explode the Code. But I was looking at reviews on Christianbook.com and they said level 2 has evolution throughout. Level 3 reviews are okay. So I would watch out for the worldview in the level your child needs.
We use Wordly Wise here, but we do it very differently. I pick a level that is in between my girl’s grade levels and we do it all out loud. I write the words on the board, we dicuss the meanings and do all the excersises together (again out loud, no writing). We do Spelling Widom 3 days a week then every Thurs. we do WW. We complete the whole lesson that day.
