My daughter is entering 11th grade and has struggled with reading and retention. We have gotten her the help she needs, but because of her reading delay, her vocabulary is limited to the point that it is frustrating to her and she feels dumb. Ideas/advice?

Not sure if what you were looking for, but what about something like WordRoots? It is workbook format, but teaches a variety of words and their roots and all that. The lessons look like they would be short which would be nice.

I hadn’t gotten any recommendations, so I went with Vocabulary from Classical Roots Book A. I know that’s a 7th grade text, but I suspect that’s where she needs to be. It may be similar to what you recommended, Sarah.

    Thank you!

You could add in many literature audios.  LibriVox has many available to download for free if you don’t want to buy them or borrow from a library.  Hearing new words in their context with correct pronunciation can help increase vocabulary.  She could also read along with the book.

We have been happy with Spelling Wisdom sold here.  Students not only pick up on spelling, but also new vocabulary words, grammar and usage, and various writing formats and styles.

As she reads, she can make a list of new words and copy the sentence it was used in and look up the dictionary definition and pronunciation for each word.

We haven’t used Vocabulary from the Classical Roots, but I have heard good things about it.  Another option is English from the Roots Up.
