Next week we are starting our new school year with 4th grade, 1st grade, pre-k and baby/toddler. It will be my first time using any of the “Visits” books and we are trying Visits to Europe. I am wondering about any tips people have for using it for multiple ages, and especially how to include my 1st grader without making it overwhelming. She is definitely interested in finding places on maps, and she has also expressed interest in tracing maps, but obviously her handwriting isn’t very small yet. I am planning to do about 15 minutes twice a week rather than trying to do one “visit” at a time, since it seems like the lessons are quite variable in length and I wanted to give a bit of consistency. Thanks!

    There are several options:

    1. In the back of her book there should be a list of the countries to identify. Print those several times and cut them out and glue on her map each week.

    2. Find a lovely colored map with labeled countries. Print 2 copies and laminate one. Cut out the countries of the second map and laminate those. Cut out and put double sided tape on the back and re-use for each map drill. As she is placing them, you can make a game of naming the countries as she matches them.

    3. You can also have her do her own by making a map of the continents and oceans (using the lamination method above) and working on those until she can find them on a map unaided.

I had a couple DC that struggled to label things this year with Visits to Europe.  After reading some suggestions on here, we tried making each country a different color.  I’d tell them to color Greece green, then color Turkey purple, etc.  It worked well for them.

I forgot about that, Holly. That is a great idea!
