    Hi there, 🙂

We are taking violin outside the home, but I also want to do piano but can’t afford more lessons, so I thought perhaps we can teach ourselves or I can teach myself and then teach my daughter, adapting to her age (5 years old).  I have a book to work from, but am thinking I would really prefer a video curriculum so I can see and hear what the teacher is doing.  Does anyone know of a video piano curriculum?  It can be geared toward a child (preferably not “kiddy” though) or an adult.  Thank you for any help!

I have bought Piano for Quitters (it’s followed by piano for life). I loaned it out right away to a friend who has had several years of lessons and she found it most helpful. It is not kiddie, but can work for kids, too. You can find it at Rainbow Resource and other places, too. I’ve just asked for it back, so I can start to learn myself.

I looked at Simply Music and thought it neat. I even spoke w/ a local teacher (too far to drive). However, what do you do when you get to the end of the dvd at home program? How do you continue to progress?

    Thanks,

    Hi Christie,

There are 2 Levels of DVDs for the home program. In talking with someone from Simply Music, after that many people are putting together their own songs or teaching it to others. I guess we’ll see when we get there, since we’re still only on level one. I love how he puts together finger sentences; teaching you how to play simple 2 handed songs so effortlessly. I sat in for Suzuki piano lessons with my boys for 2 years and it never made sense to me how they were doing it, Simply Music made sense right away.

    Blessings,

We have Piano for Quitters and Piano For Life and they are great.  I think they are geared for older children and adults, but if you are willing to learn and teach her the concepts, you certainly can – that’s what we’ve done here.

There are some very good piano programs for the computer also – Children’s Music Journey from adventus.com .  These are good if you want the child to work alone.

I just ordered simply music and am eager to receive it and give it a go. I must say I did not like the ordering process, however.

    Hi there,

Thank you for the program info!  I have a question for those who like Simply Music: do you learn to read music from sheet music so you can play songs on the piano?  I called customer service but they were a bit evasive with their answer.  My goal is to learn to play piano and be able to read the music out of our hymn book so we can sing a new hymn with piano whenever we want.  Would this be a good program for that goal? Or is Piano for Life better?  Thank you!

I may be wrong since we only in Level 1, but there is no instruction on reading music in Level 1. The whole point of Simply Music is to learn to play the piano right away, without the exacerbation or time it takes to learn to read music. Hope that helps! ~ Heather

Please keep us all updated!  I’m with Trulyblessed26 in that I want to be able to pick up any piece of music or hymn and play it, and for that I have to read music.  I’d love to hear how things go as you progress in the programs.

Piano For Life does teach music reading – but not at the beginning.  He starts with rules of harmony to encourage musical rather than mechanical playing.
