I listened to a presentation this weekend by a man who is the headmaster of a local classical Christian school, and the reasons behind what is taught really resonated with me. I disagree with the methodology in the early years, but in the upper grades – like high school – I see many similarities between the classical and CM materials, albiet different methods. Last night, I had the chance to peruse Veritas Omnibus II at a used curriculum sale, and it looked like it contained some pretty fantastic material. I’d like to take the course! Has anyone here used or perused the Omnibus courses? Is the approach compatible with CM’s philosophy? While the course I looked at is slated for 8th graders, it is quite rigorous, and I’d be considering it for a fairly advanced 9th grader, while the younger kids would use SCM type materials for the same time period.

Am I remembering correctly that Charlotte Mason was a classical educator?
I am like you in that I like the more gentle early years but there is a lot about classical education in the upper years that resonates with me.

I’ve looked through the samples and a friend of mine’s 7th grader is doing Veritas’ Online Academy for Omnibus, Latin, Logic, and Literature (I believe those four). I think the materials look wonderful, and see many similarities as far as books used to CM materials (classic books are classic books no matter which way you use them:) And yes, CM was a classical educator herself…she just lived before Dorothy Sayers and the 3-stages of classical, etc.
I thought it would be overwhelming for me and my not super academic dd to tackle it in 7th grade (her upcoming year). My friend’s dd is very academic and she does school for 5-10 hours per day. But if you’re doing it with an older child, it might work out very well! Materials do look fantastic. And (if you didn’t know), it’s from Reformed standpoint. Have you looked at Ambleside’s House of Education? Good luck deciding:) Gina

Thanks for weighing in. Yes, I’ve looked at AO HOE – am considering year 7 there, not because I’m stuck on that year but because a friend has used HOE with her older kids, but not until 9th grade, starting with year 7 – she feels it’s too much before then. I’ve read that many people start AO two years behind, so that makes sense too. I’ve heard the same thing about Omnibus – Cathy Duffy’s review, along with several others I’ve read, have stated that they are pretty rigorous courses well suited for high school years. I would hope that he wouldn’t have to do school for 10 hours a day though – perhaps because he’s older it might not take so long. Thanks!

Yeah, 10 hours sounds steep!!! Those are the times my friend gave when I asked how long the school day was…but hopefully the longer days are few and maybe because they’re out for something else? Not sure!!
