I was looking through Valerie’s booklists and I had a question. I tried to contact her via email, but my message came back undeliverable.
Does anyone know her worldview? Will her Science books contain overtly evolutionary content? (Besides the occasional, “a million years ago,” which is easy to enough to explain.)
Are you speaking of Valerie Jacobson? She is a devout Christian. The science books she lists on her site are, in general, wonderful living science authors. Many are also listed in Jan Bloom’s Who Should We Then Read Vol. 2. Many I have in my library. Most of these authors believe in evolution and Jan tells us in her book to expect it. I tell my patrons as well. I have found the most difficult books to overcome in this aspect are books on astronomy because it’s so pervasive. Books on animals or plants may mention it then go on to talk about the animals or plants themselves. Unfortunately, however, that’s what’s out there so I try to encourage my patrons to teach their children to be discerning and learn to examine man’s ideas with Scripture, which is what Valerie does as well.
Yes, that’s her. I can tell that it poses a real problem in the area of science. But you are right…my girls and I have talked about evolution and I think it’s important that they realize not everyone believes what we believe. I do worry, however, about books wherein natural selection is the thread upon which they weave their information. I’m learning, albeit slowly, that I’ll simply have to find the books and read them to know.
Thanks Robin…I found some history books on her site that look really great!
