    Hey guys,

We have no plans for a family vacation this summer but I am itching to plan even just a 4-5 day trip somewhere in July. I say July because we live on a farm and my parents will be able to watch all the animals and do all the chores while we are gone anytime during the month of July after that who knows when they would be able to help us out.

So that being said..Where should we go? We live in KY, we have 5 kids ages 9yr old – 17months old. We love camping and the outdoors.   But we love HOTELS too. I am at a complete loss of ideas and creativity. It would be great to see some historic sites (but we haven’t studied American History in detail yet, so some places maybe lost on my kids). I would love to see some great things of nature. I grew up going to the Redwoods in California and seeing the Grand Canyon but now that I live in KY those things are too far away for this type of trip. SO are there any other great things to see and do. I need ideas. Please!!

    Thanks,

    Shelly

How far are you willing to go? Flying or driving?

Well, we don’t mind either…but most likely we will be driving. It may cost too much if we were to fly and then have to rent a car. We have driven 14 hrs (one way) on a trip before. So it guess it depends on what we are going for..if where we are going is worth the long hours in a car..we will drive 10- 14 hours. Any ideas??

    Oh yeah!!!

    • Cape San Blas/Port St. Joe, FL – we’ve gone twice and stayed on the bay side. You can walk ~ 1/2 mile out into the bay and it’s only up to your knees. We saw horseshoe crabs, conchs, welches (sp?), horseshoe crabs, stingrays, puffer fish and so much more. We kayaked and splashed and we did go over to the beach, but we LOVED the bay. All but the smallest of babies can play safely in the water. We will definitely go again sometime.
    • Lake Murray, SC – We went here last year, rented a nice little cabin and a pontoon boat for a week. We enjoyed it a lot. Fishing, boating, reading outside on the swing, tubing – it was great! I was quite pregnant, so slow and relaxing was right up my alley.
    • Cammal, PA (or nearby locale) – We went here with friends to their family’s cabin for 2 weeks in the summer of 2008. It was AWESOME! The cabin was on Pine Creek – fishing, swimming, kayaking, splashing. We went hiking a lot and saw some of the most beautiful country in the world. There is a rail trail for biking/hiking. We took a side trip to Corning Glass Museum in NY (FABULOUS!!!) and ran into a county fair on the way back. It was great
    • Blue Ridge Mountains, GA – We’re going here in August. Hiking, swimming, waterfalls, relaxing and mountains. Yay!!!
    • Edisto Island, SC – It’s been years since I’ve been there, but we went frequently when I was growing up and I have fond memories of it.
    • Juniper Springs, FL – Great camping, beautiful springs for swimming
    • Jacksonville, FL – beautiful, uncrowded beaches

Well, at least it’s a starting list!

    Have fun!

I can’t vouch for these personally, but how about Mammoth Cave National Park or the Creation Museum in OH?

We love to travel..and try to fit it in our budget! We live in Middle Ga. Have you ever been to Chattanooga Tn? We love going there! There is a lot to do…and there are some combo tickets available. From an awesome Children’s Museum, Aquarium, Tn River, I-Max, Train Ride, Ruby Falls, to Rock City. Of course this can be expensive….adding up all the tickets..so I suggest pick a few and save the rest for another trip! Downtown Chattanooga is also nice to walk around and over the bridge that crosses the river. go to http://www.chattanoogafun.com

I know this might be too far..but Hilton Head, SC is wonderful too! The beautiful scenery is breathtaking! And the beach is not crowded! There are lots of bike trails on the island! We just got back and had a wonderful time! I would check in with vrbo.com for deals from owners.

Another great place is Stone Mtn in Stone Mtn, Ga. I would choose a hotel nearby or stay at their campsite. There are 2 hotels onsite but they are expensive!  We love camping there! There are so many great activities right there at your fingertips!! Train ride around the mtn, sky ride up the mtn, river boat, paddle boats, putt putt, and much much more! The largest granite mtn 825ft tall and covers 583 acres. There is a carving of 3 Confederate heroes on the mtn. Amazing.  You can hike up the mtn if you would like and there is a bike/walk trail around the mtn. I believe it is 5 miles. There is also a neat museum on site! And a nighty laser/firework show in front of the mtn! It is such a neat place to go! So much to tell just go to http://www.stonemountainpark.com

Hope this helps some! Have fun planning!!

Thanks guys for the ideas. I will have to look into all those places. We have been to the Creation Museum and to Mammoth cave.

I forgot until you mentioned it that a couple years back we had planned on going to Chattanooga but never went. So maybe I can look into that.

Last night I was thinking about maybe going to Niagra Falls, but going up through Detriot into Canada and then crossing over into New York. Does anyone have good suggestions about that neck of the woods. My husband and I did that a long time ago but stayed at a B & B in N.Y.  I dont think that would do us this time around with 5 kids and one on the way.

     Thanks guys.

Keep the ideas rolling I want to look at all the possibilities.

2Flowerboys — Do you know a good place to stay close to Stone Mtn.? We are thinking to go to the Aquarium in Atlanta one day, then to Stone Mtn. for one day and then if we can pull it off go to Savannah or Hilton Head for 2-3 days. The problem is finding a place we want to stay in Hilton head or Savannah. I am scouring the internet for a good find but haven’t found anything yet. Any ideas?

If you want to stay close to Stn Mtn..like 5 minutes away…. We have stayed at the Comfort Inn there-which is nice…there is also a Country Inn and Suites..we have not stayed at…but it looks promising! It is always crowded. And they have a 1 BR room. If you don’t mind a drive, we have also stayed at Towne Place Suites which is about 15 minutes away and a little off the interstate. It will probably be about 20 min away from the Aquarium. But the hotel has a kitchen!! a money saver! And 1 or 2 BR! The price at the Northlake one is not too bad! If you go for any hotel right near downtown Atl that will cost you some money! But on up from downtown and in between there and Stone Mtn..prices are reasonable.

As for HH, we rented a house with another fam for a week. So I decided to look some places up for you that will rent for a few days at a reasonable rate. Try http://www.vacationrentals.com  Filter on the left for 1-2 BR selection and by nightly rate. There are some pretty good deals on that one!!  Also, try http://www.seaturtlegetaways.com

HH can be pricey, but it is soooo nice! Very Very relaxing!

But if you cannot find what you want. Savannah or Tybee Island is pretty too. Just not as pretty! 🙂  HH just takes time to keep the place looking like a beautiful island! PLUS great bike paths! Rent bikes for $20-40 a week!

We have also stayed at a Towne Place Suites in Savannah. We like these because of the room and the kitchen! However, I recommend staying on the top floor …due to sound quality of the place..you can hear a lot from up above you! I am a light sleeper! 🙂

Good Luck! Please PM me if you need any more info. We had a pass for 2 yrs to Stn Mtn so we have been there quite a bit!

Thanks Michelle, I have been looking and looking for places on Tybee Island but maybe I will look more on HH. Thanks for the recommendation for the hotel in Atlanta. It looks really good and centrally located.

I’ll PM you about Savannah. Thanks.

sorry for the previous double post

Shelly, we’ve used http://www.vrbo.com many times and have never been disappointed. We like having a bit more elbow room than hotel rooms provide, if possible.

    HTH,
