Would somebody mind giving me a little snapshot of how you use this in your home? I am following the planning guide and plan on using the first 70 lessons for my 3rd grade son.
We do Spelling Wisdom twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The boys study their exercises for about 10 minutes. They choose, sometimes with my help, two or three words to analyze. We add these to our Spelling Journal (free download on my site, http://www.lulu.com/shop/kathy-jo-devore/spelling-journal/ebook/product-21046769.html) according to phonogram or spelling rule.
My boys type their dictations. The spelling and grammar checks are turned off in our word processing program, and we bump up the font size to about 20+ points. I read the exercises while each boy takes his turn at the keyboard. I stand behind them so that I can make sure they don’t make any mistakes.
Yes, kjdevore! Just what I was wondering. There just seemed to be so many ways to do it but my brain couldn’t quite work out how it works in real life.
There are a couple of typos in the table of contents. I need to get it updated, but I’ve been working on a few large projects, so I haven’t gotten to it yet.
The link still doesn’t seem to work. I would love to take a look as well. It sounds like just what I need. I have SW and want to use it but after using SWR, I have a hard time letting go of the rules! lol
@ thowell, I use the Spelling Journal to focus on what I consider the important parts of Orton-based programs–the phonograms, the spelling rules, and the analysis. But I really can’t see the point in doing the full programs that have kids analyzing up to forty words per week for years on end. For us, the Spelling Journal with prepared dictation is an awesome fit.
Kjdevore – this is perfect. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been wanting to put something like this together, but I appreciate your efforts and will, take advantage of it!
You’re welcome. 🙂 Hope y’all find it useful. I have a set of larger flashcards made. If any of you would rather have them, I’ll try to get the Journal updated today.
