I’ve seen it mentioned a couple of times, but still not clear on it.  My 3 and 4 year olds will be starting “school” this coming school year (will be 4 and 5 during the year and 3 year old would not consider letting me do school with 4 year old without her!).  I’m trying to see what I can combine for the 10 and 12 year olds to ease the load a bit.

Do you think it would work to use Spelling Wisdom as their spelling, dictation, and copywork?  Although typing that, I realize it probably wouldn’t be copywork…I would just like to have them use their best handwriting.  Is that asking too much of spelling wisdom–to cover all 3?  I don’t know if I would want them recopying it after they’d already done the dictation.  My Aspie child would never see the sense in that…  Should I have them write it the first day as copywork and then dictate it the second day or too redundant?  Or just have them prepare it, dictate it, and tell them their best handwriting and be done with it?  THANKS!

Yes, several moms use the Spelling Wisdom exercise for copywork too. They have the children copy the passage in their best handwriting as part of the study/preparation time. Then once the children are ready, Mom dictates it for the spelling lesson as usual.

How long it takes to copy it carefully depends on the passage’s length. Some moms do the copywork assignment a little each day throughout the week, then do the dictation on Friday. For shorter passages, you could take less time.

The main thing would be to keep the copywork focused enough to encourage best handwriting and careful observation of the spelling, punctuation, and capitalization as the children copy it.

So it sounds like for the shorter passages, I could have them copy it early in our school day and then towards the end use it as dictation/spelling.  Then for the rather longer ones, I may just want to choose one of that week’s spelling pieces and use that as a week long copywork.  That sounds good!  I am loving combining and streamlining!

Poor son #1 is such a guinea pig… I am so much more prepared for the others coming behind him!  LOL  I am starting him on Analytical Grammar this year (7th) and son 3@ in JAG (5th).  I feel more on track and planned out with # 2!  Feels good!

Combine and streamline, yes! Those two words are our friends. Smile

Just want to clarify that Spelling Wisdom/dictation/spelling lesson is designed to be done only once or twice a week. I may have misunderstood some of your comments above, but just wanted to make sure you knew that little tidbit.

Thanks, Sonya! We are trying to streamline everything in our lives! We’re about to put our house on the market–downsize and streamline! Yes, we do it SW on M/W/F.
