We’ve been using the memory system for a few months and I’m wondering if you explain the verses ever or if you simply memorize them. My dc are 6, 5, and 2. For example, we’re memorizing John 14:6 and very quickly explained that it was Jesus speaking. My concern is when it’s a much more detailed explanation…how do you handle?
Generally, each day I try to have a very brief discussion of what one verse means (or if several verses like in the Beatitudes I’ll pick one). I’ll just ask the kids what does this verse mean and maybe mention something we could work on. I usually do this with a verse the first time I introduce it. If it’s a review day I just pick anyone. HTH some:) Gina
With my 4 and 2 we get the verse memorized and will briefly talk about what it means…for example “out of the overflow of te heart the mouth speaks” I just asked what my dd4 thought it meant and then said thy what ever we are feeling in our heart, anger, love, frustration, that is how the words will come out of our mouth. Obviously this is not a complicated verse, but for the younger age I tried to stick wit the basics, “obey your father and mother and it will go well with you”
You get the point. I will go into more detail once we start year 1 probably
We actually just memorize the scripture. And if there are times we need the scripture for daily life, discipline, etc. I remind them of the scripture they have memorized. Mine are 5, 4, 2, and 10 months. We’ve been doing the scripture memory box for a couple years now….s-l-o-w-l-y. I don’t think it would hurt to describe the scripture, especially if it’s something they’re not familiar with, i.e., the word “covet.” I’m sure I explained that when we memorized Exodus 20.
