I am putting together my daughter’s work-study proposal / plan in pedagogy and I thought “Hey, why not let her learn the Charlotte Mason approach!” So, I am trying to decide what should be the best texts for her. Are the All-day Seminar and the Books and Things Seminar redundant? I haven’t seen them. Actually I am new to all this. (Although I am realizing that what I did with my older children is pretty similar to this method).
The All Day Seminar starts with who is Charlotte Mason and what are her methods. Then it walks you through teaching each school subject using those methods. Then the last session is “Laying Down the Rails”, which is about habits.
Books and Things digs a little deeper into a few important aspects of a Charlotte Mason education. It covers what is a living book and how to identify and use living books. It covers using things like art, music, and nature study. And the last session is “Four Ways to Destroy Your Child’s Desire Learning” so you can avoid those things.
You might also find books written about her method helpful. Just a couple: For the Children’s Sake and/or The Charlotte Mason Companion.
I’ve read these books, which are very helpful, but, the seminars help those visual or audial learners…plus, Sonya is just the best at explaining/reminding us about the simplicity of CM when we choose to complicate it.
Thanks for the suggestions, they have been helpful. I ordered the All Day Seminar and will be using some of the resources mentioned above. I will get it all planned out after I get the seminar and post it if anyone wants it.
Thanks again!
