Anyone use LIfe of Fred to supplement their existing math program?

My dd has such a struggle in math; though with MM she has been able to understand more than ever. So I have no intention of changing her from MM. However, just like in science, where sequential thought, patterned thinking and breaking down the information in an organized way comes into play, she struggles mightily.

However, she does wonderful with science concepts when in story form or audio form; so I was thinking that LoF could serve a similar purpose as my living science books just in math. She’d love the silly story, too.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks, Rachel

I’m planning to supplement w/ LOF this yr, too, if money allows it.  My dc are strong in math but I am concerned about the older boys’ experience or lack of teaching last yr at the ps.  I also just thought it would be fun for the younger crew.

Just a side note, LOF is a stand alone series so if it’s working for your dd, you may not need the other.  Or, you can supplement LOF w/ the other for review/practice.

I’m adding this in as well.  Youngest is at the point where she is into fractions this year in MUS.  However, after reading the math article from the early 1900’s (someone posted a link here several months ago) and watching my youngest dd slide downhill for a time with her math – though that seems to have corrected itself, I really have been trying to add in math, for her, in a life experience kind of way.  LOF may be what we need, and it’s fun.  I have the books for the older two as well – everyone might as well join in with the fun learning. 🙂

Love LOF here:)  We use it as a supplement to MUS for fractions and decimals/percents.  It’s supposed to be stand alone after that…so not sure if we’ll do straight LOF or MUS at that point.  Need to research more.  Anyone do strictly LOF from pre-algebra on?  Hope you don’t mind me jumping in with a new qu.:)  Gina

We use LOF as well along with Math on the Level and a bit of Teaching Textbooks here and there though MOTL is our spine.

Well, I”m glad to hear there are others with the same idea. I think she’ll like it. I’m going to start her on the new Elementary series as I am still trying to get her consistantly doing addition and subtr. well and easily; my gut tells me not to move her forward yet. MM gives wonderful incremental teachings, review and practice, which is what she needs and she likes it; but unlike my son who always knows why he does things, she struggles knowing why in most things in her little life; so math is another area where she doesn’t know why she’s doing something.

How are you incorporating into your schedule while using another program? She does MM 5 days a week; with Friday’s MM being the clock and calendar supplement. I guess I can drop that one as I think LoF teaches that within their program, right?

@Gina-I absolutely don’t mind you throwing in another question; though you may get more input if you create a separate post.

Thanks for everyone’s input. If it works for her I can continue combining w/MM or use one or the other come upper math years (as long as there are answers for me to help her because math is not my strong suit).
