Can I get some reviews of Using Language Well? Up to this point, we’ve used Rod and Staff English but do about 90% of it orally. My 10 year old will complete level 3 this year but I am considering a switch for him. I think he needs more of a spiraling approach with more review of concepts throughout the year. Will ULW provide this? Any idea when the other books in the series will be released? I would love to find something that can work for him long term.
I tried using R&S English when my oldest was in 3rd grade, it is very different from ULW! We just finished up our school year my DD (5th grade) used the 1st half of book 2 and my second child in 3rd used the 1st half of book 1.
R&S is a lot of drill, and repetitive in my experience. How many times can we identify a noun? 😉 (it is similar to the program I grew up using 🙂 )
ULW does not drill with repetitive exercises per lesson, it is learning through observation using the SW passages (I really like that SW and ULW go together!!). Each lesson takes only a few minutes, 5 minutes maybe 10 in the later lessons for my DD, but over all they are to the point and only a few questions per lesson. So far so good, and we really like it. I would suggest printing off the samples and see how it would work for your student and yourself.
For us I much prefer ULW. I had to let go of the idea that I had to drill (what I grew up with) and realize that for the most part I had to wait for my children to mature to really start to see improvement and retain what was being learned. ULW paired with SW as well as written narrations, my DD has improved so much her 5th grade year with grammar, spelling and writing. I just needed to be patient and wait for her to be ready. I am a lot more relaxed with my second child and see him moving along in similar fashion. The more I start seeing the fruits of our labor as well as fruits of being patient, I am seeing the CM methods working in LA. Something that at the beginning of our journey had me really nervous thinking I had to stick with what I grew up doing 🙂
