We have Using Language Well Book 1 and are working our way through.  I am looking ahead and know that the longer passages will take longer than 5 to 10 minutes for my son.  How do you handle this?

We just split them up into 2 or 3 days if I want them to copy the whole passage or we copy just 1 or 2 sentences and then move on to the next assignment.  I decide based on whether I feel they need to work on all the words or if they pretty much know most of the harder words already. Its ok to work more slowly and take longer to cover each book. Good spelling and grammar is the goal, not finishing the curriculum in a designated time frame.

I’m not hung up on finishing the curriculum in a designated time so that isn’t an issue, just mainly wondering how the longer passages are handled while still dedicating only 5 to 10 min.  When the time comes, I will just split them into 2 or 3 days if needed and see how that works.  Thanks Crystal!!

My son in 8th grade just finished book 2.  He spends about 20 min. to 25 min. on it.  One day is copywork and writing difficult words 3 times each.  Next day is dictation.  He studies the whole passage.  If it is long, we skip some of it for dictation and just read it out loud.  I am sure to have him spell out the more difficult words though.  Then we move on to the next passage.  We have also skipped some lessons that he did not think was challenging enough.  I like to have 2 – 4 “spelling” words in each passage.
