Are these living books?  I have bought several curriculums with these type books in the past.  Some from companyies who say they are CM style.  But we just don’t like them.  They are so hard for us to use.

I had my first experience with an Usbourne science book this past week. It did not belong to me, and the person who showed it to me said something like this, “Look at this book! Every time I pull it out my son whines because he hates it so much!”

Sure enough, upon closer inspection, I found it was one of the most boring books I had ever seen. Sure, it was chock-full of good photographs and illustrations, but there was no depth to it. Little captions and short paragraphs of text were the only information provided. And each topic was covered on a two-page spread. Two pages of captions and pictures for the entire solar system! Two pages of captions and pictures for farm life!

I think that’s ludicrous, and I don’t blame her or her son for not enjoying that book.

    Hope that’s helpful. Tongue out

I use them if I need to label something or at the beginning of a study of a large subject to flip through to get an overview of what we will be studying.  The ones with internet links can be helpful to find interesting sites.  They do not provide in depth info, you jump around the page a lot, and they are not easy for me to follow.  If we have one or get one from the library that relates to our topic, it is usually in the library box for them to look through at their leisure but doing school out of them is not easy for us.

OK, I thought something was wrong with me.  They are just NOT working for us at all!  Like Lindsey said – there is no depth to them and they jump from subject to subject with little info.  But like the other post said – I too have used them as a brief overview to introduce a subject.

My conclusion… I will not purchase any more but check them out at the library as needed. 😉

    Thank you!!!
