I just put up couple of new blog posts on “finding finding nature where you are”.  I really enjoyed doing the research on urban wildlife and I hope it will inspire others to recognize that we have lots of nature to study all around and nature study need not be a burden. Here is the link if anyone is interested.  Thanks!

Fun and inspiring.  I need it too.

I am a huge nature nut, but but my teens are starting to say “Oh geez, here she goes!” as I delve in to it these days.  I’m hoping our new year (next week) will begin a change in them as we get out there much much more and I keep up my observations, my journal and my love of Nature.  At some point, you just can’t force it and it’s probably best I’m just keeping it in the forefront.  🙂  Hopefully it catches again.  I’m also going to fill every tank with creatures!!

Oh leave it to teens and ‘tweens  try to snuff out your excitement, right!  Nature study with teens is definitely its own challenge, not only do they (sometimes) pooh, pooh it, but at least I sometimes struggle with fitting it in as they have more academic work to get done.

I think you are absolutely on the right track with keeping up on your own nature journal and just getting out there.  Good luck, I’m sure you’ll reap the benefits!

We live in an old, 2-story colonial on a postage stamp-sized lot in an urban area.  We have a neighborhood skunk that wanders our yard frequently (the eau-de-presence of it greeted me at 7 this morning when I went out to put the trash/recycling carts out front), and we have spent some time researching this fellow. That’s our urban nature study.

I think “duck & cover” is a lost art among today’s school children, but then I’m a 1960’s chick who remembers seeing the bomb shelter signs in our school, LOL!

    Sue,

That’s fun (if a little stinky).:-)  our favorite urban natue friend is the neighborhood racoon–who had 4 babies this summer.  So cute!

FYI I did just put up another post about urban nature study.
