I need some ideas, biographies, historical fiction that would be inspiring to a 13 year old boy.
We have been reading so many books on difficult issues. I mean honestly human history is plain miserable. They were all very good books but I think it is getting a little heavy.
The Book of Virtues and The Moral Compass both have excellent reading selections.
What about the history of Lewis & Clark? Or biographies of the following:
Babe Ruth
George Washington
Ghandi
Amelia Earhart
Wright Brothers
Thomas Edison
Albert Einstein
Ben Franklin
Neil Armstrong Davy Crockett
Jackie Robinson
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Rosa Parks
Harriet Tubman
George Washington Carver
Also, while it’s a Catholic resource, it’s exceptionally easily used by all denominations, there is a beautiful book called PACE: Program for Achieving Character Education. It honestly, could basically be used as a spine for a stand alone curric (except for Math and LA), as what it does is cover 11 different character traits. It uses the Book of Virtues and The Moral Compass, as well as lists great read alouds for grades K-6 that discuss the trait, as well as discusses people in history and suggested biographies to read of people that exhibited those traits. It also lists Bible verses, Bible stories etc… Then, has lots of art, music, and other activities to tie into the trait. It’s $30 new I believe from Emmanuel Books, but it’s well worth it. You’d find lots of great suggestions in it.
thank you both for the suggestions. I had looked up the Christian Heroes series at the library, they only have one of them, I might end up buying them..
We have enjoyed the Ivan series by Myrna Grant, as a family read aloud. It is historical fiction set in Russia and they face trials with keeping their Christian faith.
Have you read The Winged Watchman by Hilda Van Stockum? It is historical fiction set in Germany-occupied Holland. The main characters are boys. Very inspiring and excellent. One of my favorite books ever. It has also been reprinted by Bethlehem Books.
thank you all, they all sound like good books, I hope I find them at the library. I do own Huckleberry Finn, it is one of the books I was thinking as a possibility…
Education of a Wandering Man by Louis L’amour was recommended by Rick Boyer of Character Concepts on one his seminar recordings I have. I think it is more for high school and up, but you might check into it also.
