I just have to say first off, I just love you all! It is so wonderful to know that as I have questions that come up I can turn here. 🙂
Last night my almost 13 yo son had lots of questions about the
upcoming elections and other questions such as “What does the
president actually do anyway, what does the vice president do, can the
President himself decide to stop abortion in America, does the
Supreme Courts decision matter more than the Presidents, etc, etc. Sadly I could not answer all of his questions with certainty or clarity.
With that said, I was wondering if any of you know of any Godly books
that would help him (7th grade level) to know more about our Government, the
different offices etc. I’m not much of a politics girl but I too would like to learn more. I know that we are at a crucial time in our nations history and need to pray “Lord, have mercy on America!”
We have used the Ray Notgrass book Exploring Government, which consists of two volumes, the other is called We Hold These Truths which has historic documents, essays and speeches in it. It is really wonderfully written and was also written from a very Christian perspective which was important to us. As I am from England I wanted to know more about the way your country works and I found it a fascinating read and learned so much. We used it as a family read aloud and occasionally asked for a narration – but however you use it, it is a wonderful read. You can see samples on http://www.notgrass.com – hope this helps. Lindy
OOps I meant to put the price on there for you, so you would know if it were possible for you to purchase. The two volumes you need cost $49.95 – but the main text is very thick spiral bound and the other covers all kinds of fantastic stuff. If you can manage it, these books would be brilliant and could be used with everyone in the family. Lindy
The Ray Notgrass book looks great! It looks like it might be a bit meaty for my ds to tackle on his own but like you suggested, it could be a great family readaloud. I will definitly look into this- thank you!
You are most welvcome – a ead aloud would work very well I think – because then you could explain the more complicated parts to your son. Blessings – Linda
