My DS is 5.5 and is reading books rapidly! I feel like on a weekly basis I am looking at online lists trying to find books that are long enough to keep him occupied for a bit (he regularly reads a chapter book in a day) but also not too mature of content for one so young. I’d say he is reading at a 3-4th grade reading level. Anyway, looking for suggestions on books? He really likes biographies and other history books too. He’s been working his way through the Trailblazers series from the church library.
Also wondering whether Beverly Cleary books would be considered twaddle? What about Judy Blume?
Some Beverly Cleary books are fun reads. I’m NOT a fan of Judy Blume.
Has he read Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder? It may be a stretch, but my boys loved it when they were younger and remember it fondly.
Clyde Robert Bulla is a definite hit with boys especially.
If he’s reading Trailblazers, has he read any of Louise A. Vernon? Those titles are actually used as resources in at least Module 4 of the SCM guides, but may be of interest. Also, check to see what else John Hudson Tiner has written outside of Trailblazers. The name of his mathematician’s biographies escapes me. It may be for older readers. Worth checking though.
Have you looked at the Billy and Blaze series? They are adventures about a boy and his horse. My daughter who is 5.5 loves these because she loves horses. They are very neat books with very nice illustrations.
Thanks. We do the Christian Heroes then and now as a RA. He has read through several of the LHOP books independently. I will take a look at the other ideas soon!
