My children ages 10 and 13 have a pretty good understanding of many grammar concepts after 1.5 years in Classical Conversations Essentials, so they could probably get through Book 2 pretty easily. I want to transition away from Essentials to ULW & SW to have more context for the grammar skills they’ve learned, and for more independence with this subject.
But, all of them could really use more explicit instruction in capitalization, punctuation, and all of the concepts in Book 1.
You could do two books concurrently if you skipped the transcription/dictation part of the Using Language Well, Book 1 lessons. You will still need Spelling Wisdom, Book 1 to go with it as the Using Language Well lessons use the passages in the corresponding Spelling Wisdom book.
A couple of things to keep in mind if you do decide to do two levels at the same time.
It is important with Spelling Wisdom and Using Language Well to choose the level based on your child’s spelling skills, not the grammar skills. There should be no more than 3-4 words in a Spelling Wisdom exercise that your student cannot spell. There is a placement guide on each Using Language Well product page in the store (scroll down) to help you determine where to place your child in Spelling Wisdom and Using Language Well.
Be careful not to overload your children. We schedule two lessons of SW/ULW each week. You could schedule more lessons each week, two lessons of Book 1 and two lessons of Book 2 or 3, if you are careful to schedule them on different days and that you don’t overwhelm your children with the amount of work.
