I was wondering how long a typical school day lasts for you other mothers out there. I started out short in Kindergarten but my son just completing 4th grade we average about 4 hours a day. I have been laboring over my schedule for this year and I find it extremely challenging to fit everything in and not make the day too long. We are doing pretty much every subject listed on the curriculum guide with extras here and there. It is just so much but when I try to skim some off the top that is hard to do because everything is important in it’s own way. I also have my dd starting kindergarten this year and I want to do as much as possible with them together but not make her day too long. I would appreciate some input from others. I am not doing all subjects all year every day. some things we will do only once a week, etc.
I’m not sure… we are just going into 4th grade with my son – and the list just looks like a lot… and we aren’t even starting some things that are often started at this time… sigh
My 6th grader has between 3 and 4 hours because of all the reading she does plus family readings in history, scriptures, etc. In 4th it was less, 2-3 hours. My younger six kiddos are 2nd grade on down and lesons max out at 2 hours total usually for a day.
Here are the questions that help me when planning out schedules:
– What subjects need done this year?
– How often do we need to do them in a week?
– Are those short lessons like Charlotte Mason advised??? {Very important! If you want the broad range of subjects you’re going to have to stick to short lessons or you will burn out the kids and yourself.}
– Are there subjects here that this child or our family do not need at this time?
– Have I prayed about it all?
Another thing that helps me is to combine as many subjects into one assignment as possible. So I don’t usually give separate reading, writing, and literature assignments on a weekly basis on top of our reading, narration, and notebooking for history/science. Once a week I may give a writing assignment, maybe once every 2 weeks, but the notebooking my child does daily in other areas is writing practice, grammar, spelling, etc.
I have no clue what this year will look like but we typically work from 9-3 with a sizeable lunch break and they alternate working with the littles. I have outsourced writing this year, put them on Teaching Textbooks, and am trying VP online history. I jsut need a break since I am pulling in my 1st grader and I need to be sure I have time to stregthen his reading.
My early elementary kids were usually done by around noon – perhaps a 2-3 hour school day, keeping all their lessons fairly short. The length of the day seems to grow as they approach the end of elementary school, until we’re schooling from about 9-2:30 or 3, with a morning snack time and a lunch break and some outside time at noon. I was concerned about this in light of CM’s recommendation that each child should spend afternoons outside/free, until our local study group’s leader reminded me that CM’s students went to school on Saturday as well as M-F. We follow a four-day school week, so our times made sense in light of this.
We complete all of our family studies first. This way, the youngest has had plenty for the day if other things need to be taken care of instead of her minimal individualized studies. Otherwise, family studies are followed by 3 Rs. This is completed prior to lunch for everyone. The older kids do have more in the afternoons. Youngest (12) to finish by 2, eldest by 3. But, we have some flex throughout the week, do some high school level studies in the evenings at times, and include the littles in this for fun. We have Friday afternoons off for cleaning and errands.
I’ve never seen anything that said that afternoons are forbidden for older students in any cm writings. Quite the contrary. A lot depends on how early you begin your day, too. We are up early, me before the others. In this way, we can get chores (animal care/laundry, etc.) out of the way in order to devote full attention to studies. Before, I tried to include this during the day, but the idea of chores needing to be done kept me distracted too much and made studies drag on very late, or not get finished.
