In my planning for the coming year, I’ve been looking at what, if anything, I may need to add or change for my upcoming 7th grader’s writing. I’ve come across two very helpful resources that I wanted to share.
This little gem is exactly what it says. It’s available as both a printed booklet (linked) and a pdf. It will be very beneficial to those making the transition from oral to written narrations. It includes step by step instructions for writing a couple of types of narrations, sample narrations, and rubrics for “grading” the narrations. While it could become somewhat formulaic, I suppose, I am greatly looking forward to implementing this with my rising 4th grader next year. I may even use some bits with my 7th grader.
This paperback book is fabulous for using the student’s writing to help teach grammar. “It is a correcting tool to be used by students in concert with their teacher. It is a unique reference book which allows students to reinforce the fundamentls of effective English grammar by appraising and correcting their own work.”
Oooh- Thanks, Christie. I had heard about the Sandra Bell book but hadn’t gotten it yet and needed a reminder.
But I hadn’t seen the other one and it looks promising. Have you used either yet? With what age?
I’m thinking to use with my dd who will be grade 4 next year, but she is a pretty advanced reader. I know she’s got incredible ideas in “there”, so we just need to get them out. She’s one of those kids who knows she can’t write like a real author so she doesn’t even want to try. These two resources look like they could gently help build confidence and help her see improvement over the course of time.
Short notice, but thought I’d bump this because there is a 20% sale at Lulu for another 2 hours (until 11:59pm Pacific time) which would be good for the Angela Wilson book referenced above (“My Little of Written Narrations”). Granted, it’s only $4.50 normally as an ebook, so certainly a good deal anytime. And Lulu has discounts very regularlly.
