I am following the literature list for grade 1 with my DD 6 (almost 7). I was going to start on Charlotte’s Web, but there is going to be a play in March, so I thought it might be best to wait so that it is fresh in her mind. So, we are starting with Trumpet of the Swan. So far, my DD is pretty bored with it. We started chapter 3 today, and I decided to quit after 4 pages for fear of losing her attention completely. It is really slow so far. I don’t want to give up yet, though.
Can anyone give me advice as to how to move forward? Is the whole book slow? I was not a reader growing up, and I don’t want to turn my DD off to reading good books. Of course, she would much prefer that we read books about princesses! LOL!

My daughter – 6 – enjoyed it, but I think it did start out slow, and we listened to it as an audio book – I wonder if that would help? That said, if she doesn’t like it, go on to the next book, we don’t all have to like the same things, and while she’s little I think it’s ok to do literature that they actually enjoy.

We really enjoyed the book. But like Rebekahy mentioned, it’s okay to skip a book now and then to not squelch the love of learning.
BTW, we spent almost all of last school year getting through the book. I only read about 1 chapter per week, maybe less sometimes. But, now that we’ve read it, I’m really glad we did. I did start Charlotte’s Web with my middle boy and he really didn’t care for it. I’d like to try that again in the future as well, just to say we’ve read it.

This is one of our all time favorites! We listened to the audiobook read by the author, E.B. White. It had a bit of a slow start, but my kids didn’t mind.

OK, we’ll stick it out for a bit and see if DD enjoys it any better as it picks up speed. Also, I know she is missing pictures, and while she would enjoy a picture per two pages, I don’t think that is the main issue. We’ll try a few more days and see how it goes. Thanks!

I have heard others say that Trumpet is their least favorite EB White so I started with Stuart Little and Charlottes Web. CW was by far my kids favorite. I will try Trumpet in a few years.

We liked this book but we also listened to the audiobook read by EB White and if I remember right, we were on a road trip. We all got a kick out of the trumpet blast sound they used. Of course, my hubby and now my son play the trumpet so that may have added to the enjoyment.

We loved it. You don’t have to love all “classic” books though! I would have a hard time reading any book at a chapter per week pace b/c I think I would loose momentum, but that is just me. Maybe you could have her color a picture of a swan while you read.

Here are four choices. Maybe by the time she gets through these, you will be more into the story? It is really interesting and funny too. Otherwise try it again later or substitute something that might have a subject she is more interested in. If she is just getting into books without pictures and sitting for longer chapters, you may want to try something she picks or a topic she is into as she builds up her ability to sit or concentrate or use her imagination to make her own mental pictures. There is a female swan that he starts a family with later on so the romance is coming if you stick with it!
