Hi Tristan, and anyone else who may be using Bravewriter…

I am currently taking a look at Bravewriter for writing courses and possibly Boomerang for L.A. for my 8th grader.   My memory may be foggy but I’m thinking, Tristan, you’ve mentioned in the past that you are using some offerings from Bravewriter?  If yes, I would love your thoughts, particularly on Boomerang for L.A.  Would also welcome thoughts on the online writing courses (if you’ve used them) specifically the extent to which instructor feedback is detailed and useful!

    Kindest thanks, Angie

Hi!  Yep, we’re Brave Writer users here.  We do not generally use the Boomerang as it hasn’t lined up with books we were reading but here is what you would use it for:

    – copywork (weekly passage for 4 weeks)

    – dictation (that same passage)

    – generally talks about a grammar/punctuation concept (for the passage)

    – Think Piece questions: There are usually 8 of these and you can use them for discussion or oral narration starters, or written narration prompts.

I have NOT used their online courses yet because they seem expensive for a short class (4-6 weeks if I remember right).  I would like to try one, it just hasn’t fit the budget yet.

Thanks Tristan!    Have you used the other “L.A.” products?  Arrow?  Curious to know how good the content is (i.e. well selected passages, quality of think piece questions)

Also, I see that some of the book selections (well, mostly in Boomerang) are more “modern”…some I am unfamiliar with (or, I’ve heard of, but have never read).  Curious to know your experience/opinion if any on their book choices.  Do you know if the company presents from a secular or Christian perspective?

    Again, with thanks!

The company presents from a secular perspective (not overtly Christian).

The Arrow includes a literary element for the month with a specific lesson about that element and a writing exercise, game, or tip.  (Plus the four dictation/copywork passages.)  It does not include think piece questions but does include notes about the passage and why it was chosen, things you may want to point out to your child.  I think she does a good job selecting the passages.

Have you gotten the FREE samples for each of the language arts levels?  Those really help you see a bit of what they are like at each level (wand, arrow, etc).

As for book titles she’s done these for, I think she’s done a mix of classics and more modern titles.  I know she takes suggestions from Brave Writer moms for what books they would like her to consider creating a title for and when a title pops up repeatedly she considers it.

The items I use the most from Brave Writer are the Home Study Courses: Jot it Down, Partnership Writing, Faltering Ownership, etc.  These are project books with 10 month long writing projects aimed at specific age/abilities.  I actually adapt one project for all my ages except the high schooler (who is doing One Year Adventure Novel this year at her request).

Thanks again, Tristan!  Yes, I am looking at the free samples; very generous of Bravewriter to offer these – it’s helping me see the big picture much better.

On the home study courses, I like the looks of Help for High School.  I guess, with your eldest daughter doing One Year Adv Novel, you  have never used HfHS.  I might start with the free chapter of HfHS and see how my son does with it.  Thanks again for responding, Tristan!  Blessings, Angie

I have not used it yet, but I own it and plan to use it either for next year (10th) or the year after.  🙂 I like the look of it and think it will be something my daughter enjoys.
