We are reading A Garden of Verses this year, my 7 year old is using the book for her copywork and we are reading a biography of Robert Louis Stevenson. I thought this might be a good year to read Treasure Island. However I’ve never read it and am not sure of the language or content. Would it be appropriate to read to a 5 and 7 year old? Would it be comprehensible?
They would be too young. Treasure Island is for at least 10 yrs. old and up. What subject/genre are you trying to fill? I am sure there is something else.
I agree; 7 is a bit young for TI. We tried reading the first chapter, and my children were totally zoned out. They didn’t comprehend anything! I’m with Rachel… are you just trying to find something else by RLS or are you needing a family read-aloud or literature?
Just a thought, if you really want your dc exposed to TI – Jim Weiss has an abridged audio version that might be suitable for younger dc (Greathall has it listed as 7&up)- nothing objectional that I remember. You can listen to an audio sample here.
Thanks! Yes, I was just looking for something by RLS. We are about halfway through Heidi and I was looking for something to read afterwards. I thought something by him might be appropriate. I’ll keep looking. Thanks again! 🙂
