My family is planning to travel out west in the fall. We would like to fly into Phoenix and then try to go to Cal, Nev, Utah, NM, and Colorado. I know thats a LOT of ground to cover, but we are traveling from the south and won’t necessarily be able to go out that way again. I would love any suggestions for must-see places in these states. Of course we will go to the Grand Canyon, but if you have any other thoughts, they would be appreciated.

We are in the San Francisco Bay Area – not sure how far north you plan on coming. I can give some ideas anyway .

Starting a bit south – Santa Barbara is worth seeing. It’s about 2 hours north of LA. Fog can play a role in the weather so sometimes afternoons are nicer.

Solvang – a quaint Danish village / town. It’s north of Santa Barbara – maybe an hour north. It is Typical of a Scandinavian town in Europe. Make sure to eat some Danish’s while you are there! You could see the whole town in a few hours, but it does make you feel like you are in Europe.

Monterey – home of the popular Author John Steinbeck , cannery row, Monterey bay aquarium ( we love it!) Monterey is about 2 hours south of San Fransisco.

San Fransisco – I could go on & on . So many things . The academy of arts & sciences is really good. If your kids are older there’s the De Young Museum , pier 39/ embarcadero, Ghiradelli square ( chocolate) , The zoo ,the trolley / cable car rides etc.

YOSEMITE !!! Is a must !! I am amazed every time we go. Make sure to hit the valley floor & take it all in. Although you said you would be coming in the fall. October can bring snow. If the weather holds up you should try to squeeze it in. Check the parks schedule too…..not sure how late in the season they stay open. We always go in the summer.

Hope this gives you some ideas !! Have fun planning your trip!

We live in TN and have traveled out that way a couple of times. We loathe cities, totally and completely, so our focus is nature. We’ve seen and loved

Yosemite (we went in April when the waterfalls were glorious. Even saw a moonbow)

Sequoia (I thought “how many tall trees can one person appreciate”, but we never tired of it. A one-day side-trip from Yosemite)

    Grand Canyon…of course

Bryce Canyon (oh my, brought my mother to tears. Stayed at Ruby’s Inn)

Zion (another one-day side trip but I’d love to go back)

The thing that amazed me is how different each was! So much variety. We want to visit again.

Robin…we are going to do a lot of nature sites for sure. We hope to go to the Living Desert and the Petrified Forest and Mesa Verde. We will see. We are being pretty ambititous.

I drove from NC to Baja Mexico in 1991 and along the way we saw and loved:

    Petrified Forest

    White Sands

Grand Canyon (camped in the bottom – can’t wait to do that again but the kids have to be a little older!)

    Canyon de Chelle

    San Diego Zoo

and well, Baja was a wonderful experience – went to the southern tip to see the complete solar eclipse.

I’d also love to see Bracken Cave in Texas.
