  • I was looking at the MFW site ans checking out what DD would need for school next school year. I noticed that she would only cover Roman history for 8 weeks, and other eras are simular in fashion. Basicly, it is what I call drive by history. I also have a upcoming 1st grader and a 7th grader. How can I put MOD 3 & 4 together.

I aslo have streams of civilzation that goes through Roman history. I’m not sure what I want  to do here. Any advise would be helpful.

Sarai, I remember being in the same boat a few years back.  There are many great books for this time period and I felt like MFW missed the boat.  I do see where they were coming from, lightening the reading load so the student could stay focused on a research paper.  There are many great supplemental books listed in the MFW guide if one chooses.  We took a bit of a different approach and combined it with Beautiful Feet.  I liked the fact that MFW was covering the NT that year so we stuck with the Bible part, adding in other great books.  You can see our plan here…

Hope you find something useful here.

    Melissa,

I checked out your link and your plan is awesome!!!! I actually have a BF catalog and have been looking through it. Did your children do MFW for 11th and 12th grade as well? Could one put mod 3&4 together or at least have my 10 grader read all the books from BT list or SCM list. Right now, I have my dd read about 2 books a month ontopnoff what is required. Also, do the children actually finish the Notgrass book?

    Thank You Sarai.

We did not use MFW as written for 11th & 12th.  They use BJU American History as a spine in those levels.  Again I liked BF books better so we went with that.  I did use the MFW Bible stuff.  I really feel they have a solid Worldview.  So the plan was as follows:

11th grade English – Beautiful Feet U.S & World History; Lightning Lit & Comp American Early to Mid 19th Century; & Spelling Wisdom

11th grade History – Beautiful Feet U.S & World History; Notgrass Exploring Government, Never Before in History, & Under God

11th grade Bible – MFW Biblical Worldview

12th grade English – Beautiful Feet U.S & World History; Commas are our Friends

12th grade History – Beautiful Feet U.S & World History; TruthQuest AOR III; A Beka Economics & Uncle Eric books

12th grade Bible – MFW Spiritual Disciplines

Our plan allows for 3 full credits each year.  I split the BF guide into two years of study as recommended by BF.  This year our 12th grader is also using the TQ guide commentary and some supplemental reading.

I must say, I do not feel it’s necessary to supplement Beautiful Feet.  However, this dd is an avid reader and I am somewhat of a curriculum junkie so we work well together :))  I rarely use any program as written.  I like to customize and make it our own.

I have not used the SCM guides as written either and don’t have experience with them at the high school level.  I’ve used the first couple of guides as a spine with our younger kiddos.  I know there are plans, possibly in the archives, where people combined guides.

Yes, the students do finish the Notgrass World History in 10th grade MFW.

    Blessings,

    Melissa

    Melissa,

Thank you sooooo much for laying this out for me. Smile Do you mind if I use your plan? My DD is an avid reader as well and I just feel like she needs to be reading and writing because she enjoys it so much. Do you buy a MFW TM and put this together?

    Sarai

    Melissa,

I have a few questions to ask you. What is DK and ITW? The link you sent me of how you combined MFW & BF, is that the book list you used? Would I need to get the MFW TM & F TM?  You can PM me if you like.

    You’re welcome Sarai 🙂

Yes, I did buy a used 10th grade MFW TM.  I have the BF guides too.  Anything in red is a supplement from BF.  The rest is MFW.  It’s been a couple of years, but I believe DK was a resource book used by MFW and ITW is In Their Words.  This is a Notgrass book.   The plan makes more sense with the TM.  These are the books we used.  You are welcome to use it, but I would encourage you to purchase or borrow a TM in fairness to MFW. You would also need it for the Bible portion & English credit if you intend to use those components.

You may PM with any further questions.  I thought I would answer those questions here in case anyone else was wondering too :))

Thank you and I will PM you Smile
