transitioning from chalk to pencil

Last year I did not require my now 6yo to write on paper. We tried it, but it was a battle. He wrote on a chalkboard instead. Now that he is in grade 1, I would like to transition to paper at some point (maybe by the end of Term 2 at the latest). I think he’s ready because he wants to add stuff to my shopping list sometimes. Any suggestions on how to make this as painless as possible? Should I use lined or unlined paper? If I use lined, how big should the lines be? (I’m not using a formal program, just trying to expand on what he was taught in preschool). Oh, and he’s printing, not using cursive.

    Thanks,

    Karen

It seems like it might be easiest to transition to unlined paper first. That way you can concentrate on only one thing at a time: first, helping him hold the pencil correctly (since it is different from how he holds the chalk); then staying within the lines later.

    Just my $.02 worth. Smile
