Hi Heather! This is my favorite subject 🙂 I joined Weight Watchers right after Christmas this year and have lost 40 pounds so far- I have 20 to go. I absolutely LOVE the program. I go to all the meetings, too, and I think that is the key to the whole thing for me. Having to show up each week to “face the music” is good incentive. I was like you- I already was eating pretty well, just too much. It’s funny how you notice your habits when you start Weight Watchers- in the old days if I was making sandwiches for lunch I’d consume so much food by picking while preparing, and THEN I’d sit down and eat my lunch!
I lost most of the 40 pounds in the first six months of being on the program. For the past two or three months I have stayed pretty much the same, but it’s not because of WW- it was just life. Vacations, parties, busyness…I just hung on, and I am pleased that I didn’t gain anything. Now I am back at the YMCA and have lost for 3 weeks in a row again, and I’m on the way to my goal 🙂
It sounds like you are off to a great start!! If you have any questions, I’d love to help 🙂
Are WW meetings free once you reach your goal? I am thinking of checking it out, but $40 per month is a lot of money for us right now. I try to do it on my own, but I need some support, encouragement, and motivation. I already know what to eat and how much and what exercise to do, but I just don’t seem to DO IT. And then there is the kids; I imagine that I can’t take them with me, so I have to work out childcare. So I wonder about WW online. It is $19 per month. Has anyone tried that with success? Is there some kind of online interaction (chat or forum) with other people losing weight?
Glad to hear Leah’s success story and I am glad that Heather is on the right path. I just wish that I could join you in that…and soon.
What a wonderful success story, Leah! Thank you for sharing! I have 60 to lose and I lost 7.6 lbs last week, eating healthy, not hungry…it seemed too easy. Now, I know it’s not a common number and I should expect 1-2 lbs per week from here on out, but it was a great encouragement to me.
Sarah, you become a lifetime member when you reach your goal weight and complete a 6 week maintenance program and then you are free from then on…great motivation to stick to the program and keep losing as well!! I agree the cost is high for us too, but if you consider the fact that my grocery bill was $20 less this week because I didn’t buy any extras (chips, sodas)…I actually made $10 dollars!
I know this topic is quite old, but I wanted to see if anyone is currently doing Weight Watchers or has successes with it they can share? I actually just joined last week. I’ve just been inching up the scale in the past years — once I hit 37 or so. Ugh! And I just can’t seem to break the direction… and the bad choices. I thought I had about 20 I’d like to lose, but their scale is weighing me in differently, but it’s in the general area. And while it’s “only” 20 pounds, I’m obviously not making any real progress on my own and it just feels so overwhelming. Anyway, TMI. lol
So if anyone has any positive WW experiences I would love to hear about it, and also if you have any yummy family friendly recipes too! I have been tracking points for the past week and can now see a few problems/issues whose very existence apparently eluded me… so hopefully I’m on the right track to making better choices!
Oh, and I also ordered Trim Healthy Mama BEFORE I joined WW…. I was debating which program to follow, but THM was backordered for like a month or more. So I ended up with WW somewhat by default, and tried to cancel the THM order but apparently it is in stock earlier than expected and was already shipped. So now I will have both and although my budget is seriously not happy about the extra expense, at least I can’t say my problem is a lack of resources. :/
I started WW this month too. I did it years ago after my firstborn and it was great. Since then I’ve had 10 pregnancies in 10 years (including miscarriages) so I’ve not had a lot of time to use WW. Samuel is 2 mos old, I’m getting in gear ASAP.
Wow, Tristan, I am impressed that you are doing this when Samuel is only 2 months old!
I have been much more conscious about my choices and find myself reaching for fruits and veggies way more often — and enjoying it! I know I have much to improve in terms of lifestyle choices, but this is just such a positive step for me. Just emotionally it’s been such a boost, and of course I know that these choices are so much better for me. I have tried keeping a food journal before, but just this list, or possibly the list plus calories, has not been nearly as helpful…and I’ve never been able to keep up with it for more than 2-3 days.
Would love to hear more as you continue on, or any great recipes that work well with you and your family.
Tracking every single bite. It makes me think twice when I know I have to write it down, and my husband is keeping me accountable for that. My mom is doing WW with me too.
Using my crockpot to make soup once a week at least and baked potatoes once a week. Today I’ve got a low points chilli cooking. Tomorrow I’ll do baked potatoes and use leftover chilli on top. I actually had to go buy a smaller crock pot for soups because we just have a huge one for the whole family. LOL.
Getting into my exercise clothes first thing in the morning and not getting dressed until I’ve done something for exercise. Of course that means some days I’m still in exercise clothes at lunch..LOL.
Ah yes…habits. It always seems to come back to that, doesn’t it? lol But those sound like great ones! Tracking every single bite, yes, that has been a wake up call for me, for sure.
What kind of soup recipes are you making? That sounds good. I did finally start making green smoothies in the morning for me and my kids, yay!
Exercise — beyond walking the dog — is still elusive for me. I used to be sooo good, but am struggling to get back into my routines (habits!). But I like your idea and enjoy hearing what others are doing and what is/isn’t working.
I tried Weight Watchers last year. I was very disciplined, exercised (Jillian Michaels videos!) every day, drank lots of water…and losing the weight was harder than removing super glue from my fingers. So discouraging! WW worked well for me when I was in my 30s, but now that I am in my 40s, my metabolism has changed and I just can’t seem to drop the weight like I used to. I eventually stopped WW in despair. Seven weeks ago, I started a low carb diet somewhat similar to THM (before I knew about THM) and have lost 20 pounds with very little exercise. I see the principles of THM applying to my weight loss and am so grateful to have found a way to shed this weight. Most of it has come off my mid-section, too – 7 inches in my waist. All that to say, if WW is working for you, that is wonderful! But if you find the weight creeping off or you are at a standstill, I would greatly encourage you to try HM! 🙂
Thanks for the recommendation. Kristina! Yes, things definitely have changed for me, too, in my 40s. And nit for the better! I appreciate hearing about your successes, especially after the struggle.
I actually just got THM in the mail yesterday and it looks promising! I figure at this point I’m going to stick with WW because it’s easy and encouraging, and during this time I am going to start reading through THM because I like what I’ve been hearing about that…and the results! lol Plus, I have serious issues with sugar and carbs, so I am drawn to it for that reason as well. Thanks for the encouragement!
One thing I know about my own body is that I can’t use the weekly points allowance regularly(the extra over your daily total) or I won’t lose weight. Part of it is my hypothyroidism. I’ve always lost weight slowly, but it made that even worse. I’ve got a ways to go before I hit my 40s (I’m 32). Glad you’ve found something that works for you Kristina!
