Have any of you used Weight Watchers with success? I have done it in the past, but I remember it was not the healthiest plan in that you were allowed to eat junk as long as you didn’t go over your allowed points. I’ve heard it has changed and I was wondering if anyone has tried it recently?
I have tried it recently. You can still eat what you want within your points (and the point system is different) – but it promotes more healthy eating as fresh fruit and most vegetables are now 0 points.
That said – I haven’t had success with it as I can’t keep on it…..
Have you checked into TOPS? They are more of a support group and weekly weigh-in and usually cost less (depends on the chapter) than WW. They have an eating plan you can follow or one that your doctor gives you. http://www.tops.org
I’ve not done Weight Watchers. However, there is an excellent book & study called “Made to Crave: Satisfying your Deepest Desire with God, Not Food” by Lisa TerKeurst. Its meant to go along side any healthy diet plan you choose. I highly recommend it. http://www.madetocrave.org
It is totally free and integrates with a free app for iPod/iPhone/iPad or android. I like it because it sets up a “budget” that allows input of calories to be offset by buring calories through exercise as the day goes along. You get a net calorie reading. It feels good to exercise and see those calories being burned off.
They have a book as well which I have read, and it is good, I guess, but more geared toward people who eat out a lot. There is a very active online support forum, where I have made some good diet buddies! If anyone here joins, send me a pm and we can be friends there.
So with exercise and watching my diet I have lost 26 pounds in 2011! I am pretty happy with that!
Lose It might be a good alternative for people like me who don’t want to spend the $$$ for weight watchers and find it inconvenient to go to meetings. However, I will add a plug for TOPS, as we have one in our town and it is a very friendly group, and much less expensive than weight watchers.
I use it and LOVE it. I began end of July this year and have lost 26 pounds. It does promote eating healthy….but you can easily eat junk and stay within your points…although not easily without staying hungry. My weight loss has included several “splurges” as well.
I have finally learned what eating healthy means and what portion control is.
I actually don’t own a scale but here is what I am doing. It is the intermittent fast diet. I eat reguarly from 11-5. That means a regular lunch and light dinner type snack. That’s it. Fasting from 5-11 the next day. No counting, no diet foods. I am an all or nothing girl. I can’t control portion size that well and only crave more food. The only diet that works is the one that you can stick to. For me, this is it. One week in and I can tell that my jeans are a fitting better!
Thank you ladies for your responses! I think I am going to try the Weight Watchers. The meeting is at a church really close to my house and I think that actually being accountable to go and weigh each week will help me. There is a TOPS close to my house too so maybe I’ll check that out a bit more. I know I have to do something. I have tried everything!!! I guess not sticking to anything is my problem!
I lost about 50 lbs after my last child was born about 4 years ago…eating mostly whole foods, Maker’s Diet stuff and walking every day with a friend who kept me accountable with weigh ins. Then we had a family crisis and I found comfort in sugar wafers…yes, sugar wafers which led me down a very bad path (think Candyland ). I put the weight right back on fast and have struggled ever since with getting it off again.
I have onve been pretty successful on weight watchers, lost about 25 pounds. But of course I have gained it all back and tried twice since my latest success to start up again without success. I do not like the new point system. Yes verggies and fruit are now 0 points but the points for everything else went up a lot! It used to be mainly restrictive to fat, which worked great for me now they restrict fat, carbs and protein. So basically with a sandwich and a a handful pasta you are done for the day. That’s just way too restrictive for me, I am a carb lover:).
I will check out some of the websites posted here, I SO need to loose some weight:(.
Well, the points for things went up, but you also get more points….
I have to say the first couple of days, I was “how in the world can I eat the minimum number of points?” (and my dh, who gets the maximum number of points they give out was really having a hard time eating his points)… for us it was a LOT of points if eating anywhere near healthily….
But then, it suddnely got hard to stay within the points…. the number of points didn’t change… I don’t know what changed.
I can’t even get motivated to try anymore. I am addicted to sugar. And boy, am I glad that I never took drugs or anything like that, because if I can’t kick a simple addiction like sugar, I’d never make it against a narcotic!
The only thing I’ve had any success with is Body for Life. I lost 18 lbs in 12 weeks once (gained it back after baby#2). My husband lost almost 50 lbs in that same 12 weeks. Grrr.
My mom did TOPS for a long time, but the level of encouragment was too low for her. It seemed like lots of ladies in that particular chapter just used it for a social outlet, although I do know many people who did much better than my mom did. I would check out the group several times before you join. Make sure the attitude/tone of the members/group will work for you.
I’ve lost about 25 pounds in about six months time. I did it the old fashioned way – counting calories, eating whole foods (not fast food or processed), exersizing, and simply being more active. I used a free online calorie counter through about.com. It’s been really helpful!
It’s totally hard, but I feel so much healthier now! I have about ten more pounds to loose to reach my goal weight.
For serious weight loss, two of my friends lost close to 100 pounds using the HCG diet. It was hard, but extremely effective for them in just a few months time. They now have a new habit of eating healthy and have maintained their ideal weight.
I wanted to give an update for those of you who may still be interested in this topic. I did join weight watchers last Tuesday. I was very surprised at how much the program has changed for the better! I am already one who eats pretty healthy (mostly whole foods – mill grain, roll oats, etc)… just too much of it evidently , so it has helped me to see just how much I should be eating. I make everything from scratch already, so I typed in my favorite recipes at the WW website and voila! I have points values for those things as well. I can see how the points system could be abused though, since you can eat whatever you want as long as you don’t exceed your daily points, but you would probably end up feeling starved and not last long on the program. I think it is helpful that my leader is a big fan of eating right also. When I tried WW in the past (many moons ago), I had some leaders who encouraged ways of trying to get past the healthiest choices to make eating junk a bit easier…not looking at nutritional value, but points values only.
I recommend this highly if you need a program with accountability, which I definitely do!
