Hi everyone! I just came across a short article on USA Today sharing Scholastic’s Parent and Child Magazine’s top 100 Children’s books. Some of the titles I agree with wholeheartedly, I’ve read just under half of the titles. Some of the titles listed would never have made a top 100 for children if I was writing the list.
What do you think about the list they gave? Here is the article:
There were a lot of great titles mentioned but ummm… Captain Underpants made their list? Really? I guess when I think “greatest books” I think “twaddle-free.”
Hmm. There were a lot of books on there I love, but I’m with zillymom—Captain Underpants????? Blech. And I think it’s utter nonsense to have such a mix of books–they should decide whether they mean picture books or chapter books. Having Hatchet and A Wrinkle in Time on the same list as Goodnight Moon and Moo Baa La La La is just goofy. Where’s Heidi? Where’s The Little Princess? Where’s Little House on the Prairie? And how are THEY missing yet there is Black on White, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and Freight Train? As much as I LIKE those books, and I do, they are hardly the same literary merit as Heidi. Weird.
Seems to me that when they put these lists out, they tend to ignore the older classics, it is as if they want them ignored which is a tragedy. Some good books, but missing far too many worthier choices.
It is Scholastic’s list – maybe they are choosing ones that they have in print to further sales, or sold the most of… =) – in reality, I don’t know how they chose the books.
There are some fun books on there, but not what I would consider the best. My oldest was given a copy of Captain Underpants in PS, and she WOULD NOT let me keep it in the house. The title alone offended her. lol
And, is the “Hunger Games” a children’s book? It seems pretty dark to me just reading the introduction. Listing that along with Winnie the Pooh is laughable. I don’t think any of the Narnia Chronicles made the list either — tragic.
The Hunger Games is not remotely a children’s book. It is categorized as a YA novel and even then I’d hesitate because it’s pretty violent based on the society it’s set in. Apparently the list covers age 18 an under….?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is another one I would not let my kids read. I am not very familiar with it, but after seeing one page of the book I was completely turned off!
