How do you know when you have the right balance? My bigger kids are freaking out because I have increased their workload this year, but I really don’t feel like it is that difficult. How do you know when you have assigned too much and when it is just complaining?

Here is what is expected of the 7th & 9th graders:

    Daily:

    Bible Reading/Journal

Math – Teaching Textbooks 1 Lesson per day

Queen’s Language Arts – 1/2 Lessons per day

Spelling Power – PreTest, Review and Final Test on Fridays

French – Rosetta Stone or 1 Workbook page

    Science Reading

Mystery of History Reading (3 Chapters per week)

Yesterday’s Classics Reading (1 Chapter per day)

    9th grader also has:

    Literature book/assignments

They read their independent reading selections daily.

    Weekly:

    Spelling Power Tests (when needed)

Written Narration in Science and History

    What do you think?

Oops, I forgot to mention that they have some scripture and poetry memory work as well. One verse per month and 1 longer poem per term. I think that’s all. Thanks!

How long does it take them to complete their work each day? If it is taking too long, and there is little or no time for chores, outdoor time, handicrafts, etc., then maybe you could alternate science and history. And are you keeping the spelling lessons/review short? They shouldn’t have to spend a whole lot of time on that.

Also, would it work to do French only three days per week, and then have them work on scripture and poetry memory work on the other two days?

It may be that they were just used to getting done by a certain time last year, and now their days are longer. That is fine as they get older, as long as it is not dragging on until dinner time. If the problem is not dawdling, then you can be flexible with the schedule. If it is just complaining, perhaps scheduling a little less on Friday would give them something to look forward to. “If you finish all of your work by 2:30 each day, then we’ll end our school week at 1 on Friday and do something fun.”

I have an 8th and a 9th grader and it sounds pretty reasonable to me. I think my kids do similar amounts.

That looks very reasonable to me.

My 7th grader does a math lesson (MUS), LLATL lesson (covers all her language arts), independent reading (a chapter or two per day), and piano lesson.  I also try to fit in some math drills when I can.  As a family, we do 3 MOH lessons and 3 science lessons (AIG) per week…sometimes we do more than 3 lessons in a week.  We also have a read aloud chapter and daily Bible study/devotion (including our memory work).  I try to add in one extra per day (nature/music/artist/etc).  I have 4 additional DC including a baby, so we aren’t currently doing a foreign language or written narrations at the moment.
