Too much literature?

We are currently reading through the recommended literature in Module 2 for this school year. Right now, we’re almost finished with Black Beauty. BUT, I have both kids begging for the Little House series. We have the books, which I had planned on reading another year.

Is there such a thing as too much literature at once?

Obviously, there’s no such thing as reading to your kids too much; but I don’t want them favoring books for fun (which Little House would be right now) over scheduled literature.

Have any of you attempted two novels set in different time periods, with differing characters, at the same time?

I don’t want to squelch their desire for books, but I don’t want to take on too much either. What do you think?

I would say that if they are begging for it, read it 🙂

In the past I have missed opportunities to explore certain subjects that my children were really excited about because I felt the need to wait until the “scheduled time” to study that subject. By the time we got to it, they were no longer excited about it or they had learned enough about it on their own to satisfy their interests.

Since the literature modules are flexible, I would just read what you want and check them off the list as you go.

That’s just my opinion, of course.

I would just read them Lindsey!  I read multiple books aloud to my two boys.  Currently we are reading Swiss Family Robinson, Little Britches and Where the Red Fern Grows.  They have no problem keeping each book separate.  I’ve done this for the last two years.

I also just then check them off the list!  Happy reading!!

Oh yes, happens here all the time, though not full novel sets or series. Just a lot of variety in time periods. Last year, we were reading the Little House series and my children were also reading about Celtic Times in Ireland during the Middle Ages and watching LIberty’s Kids. The geography of all these books (and the show) are also autmmatically takled about and worked out on the map on our wall, too.

They don’t seem confused at all.

This year, my son is personally persuing war periods and different flags in different time periods; Revolutionary, War of 1812, War between the States, WW 1 and WW 2, plus learning the American anthem and the original Yankee Doodle. However, our actual studies are in Exploration from Brendan the Navigator till the French/Indian War. Plus, I read Fifty Famous People, the History of the Jewish People and of Modern Day Israel. We’re not starting our BOC until this year and they haven’t had any problems keeping things in line; in fact, it’s given more opportunity to discuss the different time periods.

I do make sure that their scheduled things are taken care of first.

We are also reading multiple books other than Black Beauty–Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tale of Solomon Owl (and other ASB books). Plus each child has their own reading assignments and leisure reading.

Thank you all for your responses. I will go ahead and grant their request! Kiss

I think of it this way.  You are able to keep track of all the people you know — each with their own “story” going on.  Same concept with books.

We started Little House in the Big Woods last night, and all of us are loving it! Just wanted to update that I decided to take the multiple literature book plunge.

    Thanks! Kiss
