I have almost every SONLIGHT book for both parts of American History. While they are probably all good books, it’s just toooo many to choose from. I’m never going to use SONLIGHT -it’s just not going to work for us. It all seemed so fun to collect them, but that is all they are. The 2 kids that will be doing American History are slow readers- they can do it but it takes forever esp. if it’s dry stuff. ( grades 5+7)
We are using Veritas Press self paced early American history this year. They do have books I can purchase but I have found most of their choices were not for us in the past( long wordy deep). I’m not willing to spend our entire day on history.
I’m not buying a new curriculum. I’m ready to declutter so we can just enjoy this. I have seen extensive lists of American favorites but again, tooo many choices. I don’t love to read aloud-(only 2 chapters a day max), we sub audio books when possible.
All that that to ask…
Please may I have your top (5-10 or just 1) most memorable/ favorite American History books that allow slow/ reluctant readers to want more! I was thinking 2 vol. set Stories of America might be great but I don’t want to add more until I reduce.
For Jamestown you have to read This Dear-Bought Land. And if that is the only thing you read for Jamestown, it is enough. It is for every age. I got it thought interlibrary loan. We have liked all of the Maestro series books for overviews – very well done. My Brother, My Enemy was excellent. Oh our history list is huge. So many fantastic books! Good luck!
