I really love the updated Genesis through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt – we just finished lesson 25 and my girls are really enjoying it and learning a lot. One question I have though is concerning the guide’s instructions for the book Pharoahs of Ancient Egypt.  Often the guide will say something like “read Chapter 2, pages 24 – 29”.  I’ve noticed that we don’t always start where we left off the last time, and the page I’m to start reading is in the middle of a chapter and I never know exactly where to start or stop reading.

The way I did it, Rene, is that I read the chapter ahead of time and put a little pencil mark where we could easily stop for the day, usually at the end of a paragraph.

Most of the readings should be subsequent; I think there were just a couple of places where I skipped some extraneous material. So if you see pages 24-29 listed one day and the next day starts at page 30, you’ll know to read to the bottom of page 29 on that first day. (Probably obvious, but thought I’d mention it. Smile) If the first day says pages 24-29, and the next day starts at page 29 again, I stopped reading partway through that page then picked up again the next day where we left off.

Of course, you don’t have to read through exactly like I did. If you want to read further one day, please feel free. Then just pick up where you left off the next day.

I am having the same problem… when the book says to start on pg. 24 it doesn’t make any sense. It’s in the middle of a chapter and we’re having a hard time just picking a paragraph to start. And same with ending, do we just randomly pick a place to stop? Confusing!

Please remember that these are guides. If you wish to read a full chapter, do so. Otherwise, as Sonya mentioned, use the guide for the amount to read in a sitting. You simply pick a logical stopping/starting point, the same as any other book, the end of a paragraph or page works well. Mark it with a pencil or perhaps a sticky bookmark. I don’t view this as confusing at all, but freeing. Let the curriculum be your guide, but know you have the freedom to make it work for you.

Also, in that book there are larger breaks (double space) between paragraphs where the topic changes slightly within  the chapter.  In the guide, those are found on the pages that Sonya marked to stop at, so that’s where we stop on the page.  I can only think of one time while reading through the book where we couldn’t tell where to stop easily because there was no double space on that particular stopping/starting page.  Then as I read it, I just picked a paragraph.  I always mark the stopping points with a pencil for my son’s sake, and I read ahead to stay in front of him.  I hope that helps!

Thank you for your advice! This is my first year doing SCM and I just want to make sure my kids are getting the education they need! heh heh. I guess I’m a bit paranoid at this point… we’ve used ABeka for years and that’s all I know!
