I am curious to see how others do the time table that Charlotte Mason talks about. I am reading Sonya’s Laying Down the Rails, the mental habits part, and I am attempting to refine my scheduling a bit for better attention spans.
My first question is when a child does his subjects promptly, do we reward right away with extra leisure time, or do we complete all school first and then give them the rewarded time? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I am trying to understand if I am doing it the best way. If my child completes math without dawdling, do I allow him to go do something else until the next subject? I am afraid it would be confusing. Right now I wait until all subjects are done before rewarding, but maybe the subjuects would be better executed if each had their own reward.
I have to laugh because I have been wondering the same thing. I thought from reading some of Charlotte’s books that I should let mine have their natural reward as soon as they were done, and then redirect their attention back to the next subject when it was “time”. Not being in a “school” setting I am very reluctant to just let them go because I prefer to keep us moving on…otherwise we spend so much extra time trying to re-gather all the kids…I let them work at their own pace for independent work, so yes, they see the accumulated free time that way. In family studies, I have them wait the couple of minutes while everyone finishes. Usually we talk about what we just did to help bridge that little gap. My fastest child is also the most energetic move around person, so she just naturally gets up and moves around during that gap, but I don’t give her true free time.
Thanks Sheraz. I usually have been letting them accumulate their minutes, but I am thinking it would be better, especially for younger ones, to actually experience their freedom a little between main subjects. I guess i could just do trial and error, like everything else in life. 🙂
My main concern is if I will be redirecting them too much…. to the point of frustration.
