I am new to Charlotte Mason and I’m trying to do a thorough read of her publications. I have also read a great deal of secondary sources and listened to some Podcasts about her methods.
My question….
My son will be 6 in October 2019. I plan to start homeschooling him sometime next fall. When I read the booklists and expectations for Kindergarten, I question how long he should be in Kinder before transitioning to Form 1b. We have already read many of the books recommended on the Ambleside side and he has mastered a lot of what seems to be expected of a child of his age.
I recognize that CM kinder is still mostly about enjoying books together, habit training, and time outside. I do want to take some concentrated time to establish our homeschool rhythm, work on memory and copy-work, etc. but am wondering if I can transition him to Form 1b after 6 months of so if we seem ready.
There is no magic amount of time per se. You most definitely could start him on 1B after 6 months. But, by that same token, he doesn’t have to start next fall, either. CM did not say children had to start at 6 – she said they should not start before 6. It certainly wasn’t uncommon for a child to be 7 before starting Grade 1. Where your child is a later birthday, I wouldn’t hesitate to hold back and wait longer, another year. Or, if nothing else, you could wait and start Form 1B in January of next year.
