Thoughts on my scheduling idea?

Well, while it’s not very CM, I’m going to try something new with scheduling. My plan is, to do Memory Work (5 minutes), Copywork (5 minutes), Math review (basically one of their MUS worksheets which only takes 5-10 minutes) and Reading practice (10-15 minutes) daily, and then do more of a block schedule for the rest – so once our review work is done, we’ll have a longer, more focused lesson on one topic, rotating between math, language arts, science, history and then the 5th day we’ll leave as a flex day for either catch up, field trips, appointments, maybe an art project etc.

I figure this way, it’ll allow us more time to do some of the extras we’re always wanting to do but never get to. So, on Math day, we’ll do our main lesson (introduce the new topic, watch the video if necessary, spend time practicing it etc), but then we can also spend time playing math games etc… On LA day, we’ll focus on our grammar/phonics lesson, journal entry, dictation etc… And again, add in some of the games and extras that we have but just never get to. We have some great games/reinforcements, but by the time we were doing everything daily, I just found we (my kids are 9 & 6), we were pretty well tired out and just done, especially since we already start our day with Morning Basket (which is where we do our Bible and rotate between the CM studies like picture, composer, hymn etc), so they’re just sitting there, unused. I also think it may add a bit more “fun” to our learning.

Now, something I am considering, too, that I’m interested in your thoughts on, is I was considering “assigning” the Math and Reading practice as “homework”, that they could do with their father after supper. Since it would only take them 15-20 minutes, I thought it might be a nice way to include their father in our learning?

    Thoughts?

This type of schedule reminds me of how to schedule Five in a Row unit studies based on picture books.  So I think it will work.  Good ideas.  Keep up daily practice in skilled subjects (3R’ s) with their review work is good.

How willing is their father to help in the evening?  Will your children do just as well with it later in the day when they are not as fresh as in the morning?
