Again, thanks, ladies! I think we are going to end up with a mostly basics week again as we prepare to go away for the better part of two weeks. There are alot of extra errands to do, packing to get finished. I love the flexibility of a year round schedule, I mean my husband and I work year round, so being able to take a day off when dh is home is a treat we’d like to be able to enjoy without completely throwing us off kilter. And I liked not being tied down to more than the basics when we have company or it’s getting close to Christmas, etc.
My first year I did a year round school year and had a small break in July before starting back in August. This year I decided to take a longer break so we haven’t been taking our week off each month since we started back in January. We should be done mid-May. I’m looking forward to having the extra time off, but I’m wondering if after a few weeks I’m going to want to get started again??? I always start alot earlier than PS (usually beginning of August) so that we can go on vacation in fall or spring when everyone else is in school. We love this!!! We have a schedule that we follow, but we keep it very flexible. When we feel that we need a break we take one. As long as we have completed our 180 days we feel that it doesn’t matter what days of the week or time of the year it gets done.
When my daughter has a complaining day, I usually very calmly ask her if she would like me to put her in PS. I tell her that she can sit in a desk for seven hours and fill out papers. She can spend 2 hours a day on a bus, come home and do homework, go to bed early get up early, etc, etc, etc. Funny! She never takes me up on that offer!!!
You are luck there. My 11 year sees and plays with fellow classmates regualrly and sometimes really misses school and would love for me to put him back in. However, I expect that will change in September when those same fellow classmates are bused to the Jr. High School for sixth grade. They will need to catch the bus at 7:05 for 8 am class. He has a hard enough time dragging himself out of bed by 8 am. (The Elementary kids here in our tiny community start at 9:15, so this will be a huge adjustment for many of them. Even if they are used to being at the sitter’s early, most kids that age are not fully awake for adaquate learning at that age. The school board has admitted that studies have shown children that age learn best after 11 am, but by then the better part of their school day is done. They have no plans to change it, however.)
