No, I love them! I am reading them to my kids for narration practice. These books have very short chapters and continuous plot lines. They probably won’t be enough to challenge them, but as I mentioned, they are great for narration practice, both oral and written. The language is certainly not dumbed down and I would probably put them in the catagory of Beatrix Potter books, but I enjoy them, and learn new vocabulary, every time I read them. 🙂
My girls are 13, 11, and 10, and we will be reading the bird and animal books this year. I agree with Caroline’s assessment. I think it’s Sonlight curriculum that states that having children read books at a reading level slightly lower than their abilities actually helps them to “devour” a book rather than struggle to comprehend. It also makes it nice when we take turns reading aloud – everyone is able to do it, even my reluctant youngest. 🙂
