I was super-excited to start this new school year with the kiddos, especially after ditching the dreaded Explode The Code workbooks… The kids were not so eager, and kept saying how they didn’t like school.

Well, we’re only three days in, but already I’m a little worried. The kids are loving it, and we are only “doing school” between 9:00 and noon (plus some read-alouds later in the day). I have time for laundry, meals, and the two Littles. So of course, here I am wondering what I’m missing? Maybe I just need reassurance that yes, our schedule is covering everything it needs to… So here it is… Opinions welcome.

We school four days a week, for my health and sanity, and do more weeks in the year to compensate. My daughter is 7, son is 5, and I have a 2yo and a 10mo as well.

Breakfast is 8:30-9:00 and includes memory verse, hymn (we do a new worship song each week), brief Bible or hymn study (that day’s copywork), and calendar.

    9:00-11:45:

    Mondays:

Science or social studies read-aloud/narration (10 min)

Memory verse copywork (5yo will spread this out through week) (25)*

    Piano (7yo) (10)

    Singapore Math (25)

Silly song and dance break (I sneak in geography songs or whatever else here!) (5)

Alpha-Phonics, sight word and math drills, and reading with Mom (25)*

MadLibs (for parts of speech) (15)

Geography (coloring and labeling a map for whatever region we’re studying) (20)

*7yo does copywork while I do language arts w/5yo, and vice versa

    Tuesdays:

Science or social studies read-aloud/narration (10)

    Proverbs copywork (7yo) (15)

    Math (25)

Handicrafts, science experiments, nature walk, field trip, etc.

    Wednesdays:

Science or social studies read-aloud/narration (10 min)

    Hymn copywork (7yo) (25)

    Piano (10)

    Math (25)

Silly song and dance break (I sneak in geography songs or whatever else here!) (5)

Alpha-Phonics, sight word and math drills, and reading with Mom (25)

Geography (map puzzles or flag sticker books) (15)

Unit-themed dinner prep (we are studying world cultures this year) (25)

    Thursdays:

Day off, kids do journaling, but no other requirements. We may run errands, do an extra field trip, clean house, take a sick day, etc. (the day off can shift from week to week as needed).

    Fridays:

Science or social studies read-aloud/narration (10 min)

Thank you or friendship card copywork (7yo) (25)

    Piano (10)

    Math (25)

Silly song and dance break (I sneak in geography songs or whatever else here!) (5)

Alpha-Phonics, sight word and math drills, and reading with Mom (25)

    Artistic Pursuits Book 1 (40)

I often put classical music on during “school” as it seems to help the kids stay focused. In the afternoons, we do independent reading and some video games at quiet time. We may watch a documentary related to our current country/region study. I read Little House or similar at snack time, except for Thursdays when we have swimming lessons; I read poetry that day. Other than that, I kick the kids outside as much as possible. Then for a bedtime story, Dad reads picture books, kids’ Bible, or A Child’s History of the World. We don’t do Shakespeare as I just don’t feel a need to focus on it right now.

Is this really all there is to it?!? Did I completely forget something?

Looks good to me. 🙂 In fact, I would probably only do 2 to 2.5 hrs of “school” with kids as young as yours. I’m so glad you are enjoying it!

Curly, I build in extra time for nursing the baby, changing diapers, cleaning up after my tornado of a 2yo… It isn’t quite as long as it looks. Speaking of toddlers, CM has been turning out wonderful for keeping him occupied. He loves getting in on the family activities on his own level. Unexpected bonus! I have found the same thing with the 5yo–he isn’t “required” to do the entire schedule, but so far he’s wanted to 🙂
