It has been a while since I posted, and we are doing great using our new plan (following the curriculum guide on SCM). Switching from a curricula that was way too much to our new line up felt like a huge relief to begin with, but now that we are used to the changes and it takes us only about 2 or 3 hours to all of our work every day. Is that normal?? My kids are ages 7 and 9. I would like to just post our regular schedule and let some of you tell me that it looks GREAT!! LOL!! And that I am not dreaming. Or if you have to, tell me that we need to beef it up a bit!
Monday Together–
Apologia Science
Gen-Deut. History
Lyric Language Live! Spanish dvd
Scripture Memory Box
Monday Guided—
Math U See
Language Lessons
Spelling Wisdom(dd)/Spelling through Copywork (ds)
We do school for 1 hour in the morning; completing bible, scripture, literature, our subjects that get rotated like poetry and music, and Math. During the break 4th grader does Handwriting, grammar, and independent reading on his own. After the baby goes down for a nap we do History Module 6(3days), French on 2 days, Art on Thursday, Geography on Friday, Phonics everyday with K son, Spelling for 4th, and Science on 2 days. The 2nd half of our day is usually done in 11/2 to 2 hours.
Nice job! Charlotte’s time table for Grades 1-3 covered everything in 2.5 hours (9:00-11:30 AM). Grades 4-6 covered everything in 3 hours (9:00-noon). Afternoons were for handicrafts, nature study, etc. So enjoy!
Whew!!….I’m so glad that this is right! It has become more fun and less of a burden everyday!! I’m so thankful!!
The Spanish dvd is called Lyric Language Live! It was recommended on the Ambleside site and is just a fun dvd with several songs in Spanish and English. Here is a link to it: Lyric Language Live!
Yes, we are almost done with module 1 and will begin module 2 in January. I am really excited about beginning module 2! The geography looks so great, and my daughter has been asking about mythology recently!! Once again, everything is working out just right! 😉 (God’s providence, I am sure!)
I’m glad my schedule is helpful to you guys! It looks like a lot, but it really is not that time consuming at all! I really don’t feel like we are doing much until I look at it all written out. That is why I wanted to be sure I am doing it right! LOL!!
I’m so glad it’s working so well for you! I am really looking forward to starting Module 1, but I don’t want to push them. We’re going through a nature/arts curriculum for K and doing math, QLL and Bible. I’m so glad I’ve found this place. I look at other things constantly, probably always will, but God keeps bringing me back here graciously and peacefully.
Thanks for everyone’s encouragement on this subject. I am transitioning to Charlottle Mason Method with my 6th and 3rd graders and have been alternately concerned and relieved at how much shorter and less stressful our days have been. Before, we struggled to finish everything in 4 hours, 3 in the morning and 1 after lunch. Now we easily finish morning work in 2 1/2 hours and after lunch is a quick 30 to 45 minutes. My next goal is to get everything done before lunch. What a blessing that will be!
We just started the Spanish dvd this school year and my kids are 7 and 9. It is very simple and I don’t require them to do any written work. I do have a Spanish workbook that my daughter (9 yr. old) likes to do for fun, but I don’t have them do it for “school”. They have learned the days of the week, numbers to 10, several names of food, family names, and colors just by watching and listening to the dvd songs. They think it is fun 🙂
And Cindie, I know what you mean about looking at other things…..I have been looking at the Higher Up, Further In website and that is what made me begin to second guess our schedule. There are so many books listed for 2nd and 3rd grades on her schedule!!! I don’t want my kids to miss anything, but how would you do that much reading? I think I may pick out some good books from her list to offer my children for extra reading in their free time….I don’t know. I’m tired tonight and will most likely have a different opinion tomorrow. 🙂
Oh, and I have also been wondering if I should be giving them some assignments to do on their own. Maybe reading for history or science that they must do and then narrrate. Oh, I think I need to watch my seminar dvds again…….
