Since it sounds like many of you use TQ and may have read this book (This Dear-Bought Land), I thought I’d ask a question here. We have just started the book and would recommend it highly BUT there is a lot of sailing terminology that my boys (age 8) don’t know. I know some (having a 17yo who loves sailing) but sometimes I don’t know either. I’d love for there to be an excellent study guide with this book because there is so much in the book to dive deeper into. Does anyone know of such a resource in existance already? (Or will I have to be the one to make it? 🙂 )
Well I’ve used TQ since it’s release and have that book on my shelves but I haven’t read it! I also don’t know anything about sailing (motion sickness). But I think it would be really cool to read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch and maybe find the sailing and navigation manuals he himself wrote. Maybe that could be a project for your 17yo. Living books are written by one person with a passion for the subject! 🙂
I read This Dear Bought Land aloud to our then 8 & 10 year olds last fall during our exploration study. It ranks up there at the top with Chestry Oak IMHO.
Shannon….I don’t know of a study guide, but I would suggest to keep reading. You may be suprised by the vocabulary your children pick up based on context clues while you read.
We have been searching high and low for an affordable copy of this book for our personal library since we read it. We were within inches of a 50 cent copy at a used sale a couple of months back. However, someone with Jan Bloom’s book snatched it ahead of us :(( Our dd was near tears.
Ack, 50 cents??! I’m seriouly considering the $35 to $40 pricetag I keep finding and think that may be reasonable! I’d love to find it for less but haven’t seen it yet. The copy I have now is borrowed from a university. It is such a wonderful size and weight, in wonderful condition. I want this exact copy – I’m afraid if I buy it, it may be a different edition/size/paper. I made my husband hold it last night while I explained how much I love to hold a perfectly weighted/sized book in my hands. I can’t comprehend reading some books on an e-reader. This is one such book.
I asked the kids if we could pause the book so I could preread and have ready to explain things but they wouldn’t hear of it. I agree we’ll pick up some things along the way but I just thought this book is so rich it would be wonderful to really digest it fully and learn about things tangential to the story line.
I read Carry On Mr Bowditch to my oldest last year as a bedtime read. We both loved it. We did a series of sailing books bc of his love for boats.
OK, I’m going to have to find out about Chestry Oak now!
