    Hello everyone

I would like to organise a (musical) theatre project with a group of 5 – 7 children (aged 5 till11) and wanted to ask whether anyone of you has any ideas! Maybe you have participated in a theatre play before and could tell me about the best way to start organise.

I am looking forward to your suggestions.

    Many blessings from Malta:)

Hmmm…That is a small group with a varied age range.  Are you thinking seasonal performance or just a fun dramatic experience?  My first thought is to look for something based on a familiar fairy tale or fable that your young children could dramatize.  When I was in my about 12 our Girls Auxiliary group performed a 15 minute “opera” version of Little Miss Muffet with the words to familair folk songs rewritten for the story line.  A year later we did a Japanese Theater type spoof of The Three Little Pigs.  I think my mother would have found both scripts in a library book of one-act royalty free plays.  You can find all kinds on the internet, but it takes some weeding through to find the gems that are suitable for your troupe.

If you can give me a better idea of what you are thinking I may be able to offer more helpful suggestions.

We aren’t doing a musical, but we are using this for our co-op play.  🙂  The kids are having a great time with it.  http://family.christianbook.com/adventures-odyssey-4-radio-scripts-volume-3/9780834198395/pd/4197755?p=1143776&event=ORC

Thank you all for your replies, you are great! I can always trust that there will be some good advice!

I guess I should have thought more about what I really wanted in advance, I now have written my own plot that suits our conditions and am going to try to rehearse with a few kids. Hopefully I will be able to find all the materials (paints for sceneries, costumes, etc.) I need, I’d love to have the kids help me paint and create the scenery. I’ll just perform it at church and will use Sunday mornign and some week days to rehearse. Main purpose is to give the kids a fun but also serious experience, getting them to take practiacally part and engage in the rehearsing and creating process and to encourage them to practise their lines and identify with their characters, etc.

Thanks, Laura, for your suggestion, I will certainly have a look into it!

Sounds great!  Would love to hear about your play!  Our Kidz Church has been performing large musicals at Christmas Time, but I would really like to get more serious about theater again.  I’ve considered looking into the local theater group but find so many secular productions are not something I would be comfortable being part of.
