    Hi all ~

I’m planning my schedule, counting the chapters in each of the seven books we plan to use and splitting them up into terms (going through my SCM planning DVD).  Do you all read the book until finished, say 3 or 4 chapters a week or do you schedule more than one book for reading during the week for variety?  I’m talking only about Literature books.  Thanks.

I haven’t started my kids on literature yet (oops!), but what I’m planning on doing for us is doing one book until it’s finished.

I plan on doing Shakespeare (not every day), one read-aloud literature for all of us and one for each child to read independently.  They can always read their independent book later in the day or evening or early a.m. before school starts.

    Thanks for your responses, Ladies.

I don’t have any independent literature readers yet, so I will just read one chapter a day until the book is finished, that would work well.  I was looking at Ambleside Online’s schedule for Year 1 to see how they break it down and they have a reading selection from different books each day of the week.  I wasn’t sure I really liked how it was done, so I was posting a question here to see what you all did.

We read from a different book each day of the week. We like the variety, but this is a personal choice.

We read a Science/Natural History book one day, a Literature book one day, etc.

Christie, so not every subject, other than Bible and Math, will be covered every day?  Is that what you do?

    Cindie,

I think that we are both trying to accomplish the same thing 🙂 I have been trying to figure out how to reschedule our Winter Promise history books so  that we will not have book overload. I used Simple Charlotte Mason module 1 last year and thought I had finally found a curriculum that worked for us! I had planned to go ahead with module 2, but my daughter requested American history and I am such a dufus that I did not realize that I could just skip down to module 5!!!! I ordered Winter Promise for us and have been completely overwhelmed. I have been trying to decide if I should just resell all the Winter Promise stuff and use the module 5 books or just read thru the WP books in order one at a time, taking our time.

I ordered the seminar on DVD and hope to get it soon.  I went a little crazy and ordered WP history, science, and LA for my children this year 🙂  Learned a good lesson though….

What do you use for language? I am having to add copywork into our days, and may begin some dictaction with my daughter for spelling (3rd grade). She can spell everything in the SpellWell workbooks that came with our WP LA package.

Hope we can help eachother 🙂  Keep asking questions, because you are helping me too! 🙂

    Cindie,

Here is a link to a previous thread about this topic and I replied in detail re. how we do it (keep in mind, this is just our family’s way). I included a link to our printed weekly schedule in case that’s helpful. You can see my answer to this and other’s too. HTH, Christie

Oh, wow, Amanda, I kind of went a little curriculum crazy too.  I bet you were overwhelmed!  We came from Sonlight to WP and that was a change, I can’t imagine what SCM to WP would be like!  I’ve dropped WP’s LAs, we are doing Queen’s Language Lessons thanks to the Ladies from this site.  I am actually not really able to use many of the books from WP since they aren’t all related and are at different levels, so we are using what we can and trying to sell the rest. If I could resell the whole thing, I would, but no one seems to be interested.

I’m actually gathering information for when we begin Module 1.  I want to do this well and since I am new to CM, I’m asking a lot of questions that these Ladies are graciously answering.  I am so glad someone is getting something out of them too.  I’m not sure when we are going to start Module 1, maybe in January or maybe next fall; but until then I’m going to get the basics down, short lessons, manipulatives, nature notebooks and lots of time outside, etc.  I have really clicked with this method, it just makes sense to me; but I have a lot still to learn before I feel confident going full force into school.  We are doing reading, math, Bible and QLL for now.  I am also fortunate enough to have a freshly graduated student from the fine arts University here teaching my dds art once a week.

I ordered some of Sonya’s handbooks (Genesis through Deuteronomy, 106 Days of Creation and Hours Out of Doors) to see what I thought, and it was like a breath of fresh air to me.  It actually clicked!  I am really excited to dive in and discover with my girls now instead of being overwhelmed.  Was Module 1 as pleasant to do as it looks?  We are going to wait a little bit for 106 D of C just because I want to get our nature notebooks down as a habit for our science first and add some living books in.

I tried out the Organizer for 30 days, and while I love it, we don’t really need it right now until we have more of a school schedule; but you can bet I will put everything in there when we are ready!  What a blessing that is going to be.

Anyway, nice to meet you, Amanda!

Wow, Christie, that’s great information.  Thank you!  I see you do Literature almost every day, but at different times and with different material.  It gets switched around so they don’t get fatigued with the same thing every day at the same time.  That means I need to be a little more creative when I make my schedule.  I like the colors on your schedule too!  What program did you use for that?

I can’t tell you guys how much I appreciate all the help you all freely give.  It is very reassuring to know when I am lost or just plain turned my light out myself, you guys help show me how to turn it back on.  Smile  This forum is a blessing to me, thank you.

So what is Queen’s LA curriculum like? I  ordered our nature journals from them and we are also doing their Pictures in Cursive writing books. (Beautiful, by the way 🙂

I don’t know for sure, but I think I am going to just try and “get by” with what we have this year. ;( I don’t know if I am gonna like it, but feel a little obligated after spending sooooo much money!  I will just have to do some MAJOR rescheduling.

I would love to know more about how to choose dictation passages for my daughter for spelling. We have already added in Bible verses for copy work, so I guess I could use those for dictation too…… I am really excited about Spelling Wisdom. I will get that for sure next year, but hate to spend more money this year.

I also LOVE everything about SCM. Module 1 was great for us last year. I had tried another ancient history curriculum but my 2 children (ages 6 and 7 at the time) were a little freaked out by the Egyptian myths and pagan worship. SCM saved us last year, for sure. Plus, my children are very “artsy”. They love doing picture studies, listening to any kind of music (or playing it), and the fact that SCM does science from a creationist perspective is a big plus in my book 🙂 Oh, and nature studies are a huge hit at my house this year too. We have caught all kinds of creepy crawlies in jars this past week.

I jokingly told one of my friends that my children have been teaching themselves with the Charlotte Mason method for years, but I am just beginning to figure it all out! 😉

Amanda ~ Queens LL is very different from your standard LAs, especially in the younger years.  One day it is poetry, the next art study, the next copywork, etc.  It is VERY CM and gentle.  It is just one workbook and we love it.  We did SL’s LAK last year and realized it was not for us.  WP was pretty much the same, just more choppy, so we ditched that as well; but at least we didn’t try and muddle through 25 weeks like we did with SL, I knew better this time.  I had no idea who Charlotte Mason was until a couple of months ago, but we were actually trying to make our curriculum that way without knowing it, or at least mom didn’t know it.  We finally feel like something actually fits without major adjustments.  I am a little frustrated I had so many misses, but they are all learning experiences.  I know now what I don’t want and I have made a decision, which is a great weight lifted off my shoulder.  I am very thrilled about the Bible and History knitted together; and since I was not educated that way, I will be learning right along with them.

Looking forward to figuring it out with you!

I will admit to being a major perfectionist when making a schedule! I made the colorful one on my Macbook w/ iWork Pages. I’m very visual, so the colors really help me.

Our days rarely proceed in perfect order, but it helps me tremendously to have a plan. My son’s schedule is similar, but w/ less work since he’s 5.

    Blessings,

    Christie
