So…our local school system was purging bookshelves in several libraries. How sad to see 30 plus boxes of books to be done away with. Because I have an “in” there, I was able to go through the boxes.
I pulled a good 30 or so classics – mostly hard bound. We had many of them already in softcover, but really! They were throwing away books like Johnny Tremain, Robinson Crusoe, and the like. They were getting rid of poetry anthologies and tons of geography books. While the geography resources were not living books – the pictures and maps were wonderful. These books were pulled because they were not checked out in a very long time. Sad.
There was a fair amount of twaddle that I overlooked.
In a box, I found Kenneth Grahame’s The Reluctant Dragon. He wrote Wind in the Willows. We read Reluctant Dragon this week. Rather timely after reading Saint George and the Dragon with my youngest. If you haven’t read the Reluctant Dragon – check it out. Wonderful. Had never read it and wondered if others knew of it. Also, check with local schools. When they purge books they may let you go through the throw aways first!
